    Default 45 ACP for IDPA

I would like to get into IDPA this coming year.
I was looking at two CZ-USA pistols
the Dan Wesson Pointman 7 and the Valor 45 ACP are these legal for
IDPA and what would be the better choice. I have about a 1200.00$ budget
and already reload for 45ACP. I had a Kimber Gold Match at one time but it was stolen, never used it for any form of competition.

Any advice would be appreciated !!!
I plan on going to the Wilkes-Barre Shooting club's IDPA match this coming Sunday to see what it's all about and what everyone is shooting.

    Thanks
    Rick

WBRP is having their match on this coming saturday 12/20.

Don't come to watch... Bring something along to shoot because you just can't appreciate how much fun things are without doing it. Also you won't probably fully comprehend the procedures and rules unless you actually go through it.

As for advice on the gun. I don't think either will be better for IDPA. it is possible that the Valor might be slightly less likely to have the sights go out of whack because they're not adjustable. But that really is personal choice... Their both full size 1911 pattern pistols, the main thing to keep in mind if you're reloading is that CDP guns have to make 165000 power factor in order to be legal.

Come out and have fun. All you really need is a service handgun of 9mm caliber or larger, a holster, and at least 3 magazines. This time of year you can use your winter coat as a cover garment and you'll be good to go.

Springfield TRP, IMO is probably one of best 1911's on the market for the price.
    $1200-$1300.

If you are using it for IDPA, then you have to get the standard TRP model.
The Operators Model has a bull barrel, and bull barrels are not permitted in IDPA. (You need a 1911 with a front bushing)

Actually... bull barrels are allowed...just not in that length of barrell.

For example, my 3" Ultra has a bull barrell...and it is legal in CDP.

For my IDPA gun, i use the Kimber TLE II. The foregrips take a bit getting used to...but in the cold, or when sweating your peaches off...they do come in handy.

Unless your totally sold on a 45. I would like to recommend a 9mm for playing the games.

Ammo is much cheaper. Shots can be recovered and second shots made quicker with a 9.

Here are some stats from one of the bigger events. It shows the make of gun, then the caliber, then how many of each there was. Should show you that 9mm really are prefered for playing the game. But they aren't required.

    PISTOLS USED:
    Glocks
    21
    45acp - 3
    17
    9mm - 32
    34
    9mm - 52

    Smith & Wesson
    M&P
    45acp - 7
    9mm - 24

    Springfield
    1911
    45acp - 1
    9mm - 1
    XD
    45acp - 2
    9mm - 9

I'm already set up to reload 45ACP have lots of brass, various powder's
cast bullets, plus a Dillon Progressive Press. Also have close to 1000 loaded rounds. Then I had a break-in while I was away and half dozen guns were stolen includeing my Kimber Gold Match......so I'm leaning towards the 45.
    Thanks

If you want to use a custom 1911 clone, then you will be in the custom defensive pistol (CDP) division. Check out the CDP criteria in the rule book at the link below for specifics.

    http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf

The whole point of IDPA is to eliminate the absurd "my gun was more expensive than your gun" IPSC mentality. If you are worried about equipment and gamesmanship I think IDPA is the wrong sport for you. Use a gun you actually keep for defense. That's supposed to be the idea, to have fun seeing what you can do with the gun you actually carry.
