Year of manufacture for Mossy 500

I need help in finding year of manufacture of a Mossberg 500. I am getting ready to have it drilled and tapped (no it is not already drilled and tapped!) for scope base and mounts. There are two different bases, dependent on year of manufacture. I have already contacted Mossberg, but no replies. I though maybe somebody out there might already have a list and could look it up for me.

Serial Number is: J046254

Also, does somebody have any pics on how to shim barrel?

I got mine in the 80's and it was drilled and tapped for a scope mount. I do not know if that helps or not

Mystery solved. Mossberg Customer Sercice just emailed me and my Mossy 500AS was manufactured in 1983. Mounts and rings are in the mail and going to gunsmith after Xmas!

hmmm and here I have been all year saying I have a rifled bbl with the scope mount and scope on it doing absolutely nothing...

BTW, the combo package is $249 this year at Dicks... Has a rifled and scope bbl

Appreciate the offer, but: I wanted a smoothbore (could switch to buckshot in close as weapon will be a "varmint" gun also) and it is actually a winter project. Didn't want it too finished where I couldn't tinker with it. Gun itself was a survivor of the Feb 6, 2008 tornado here, as am I. I bought it from the guy because he needed money to feed his kids and I hated to see a fine old gun lay a wreck.

You still interested in selling the rifled barrel? How much you looking for? Its for a mossy 500 correct.
