Default Cheapest Long Range, High Speed, Tack Driver AR Project

OK, so many of you have figured out....I really like shooting the AR. I've found it to be accurate, versatile, and forgiving in terms of maintainance if you do your part.

So....I've had some customs built for 3 gun and CMP shooting as well as shelf and kit guns. All of them ran great with some knowledge of the platform and I'm a firm believer that you should get whatever you want from an AR under $1000. $1200 in blissful excess.

Well...after a couple Dos Equis and some fine Mexican cuisine I was thinking about this years 3 gun schedule and how I really couldn't decide on a Standard (open sight) gun with 22-24" barrel or a SPR type 18" long range tactical model with full length gas system. A couple rum and coke's and the SPR won out. Sure....I have the .5 MOA Gator for Tactical class already and I could just buy another scope....or another upper....but with stripped lowers being so cheap.....why shouldn't I have a dedicated long range AR?

Well...lack of money for one thing.

Then I heard it.......a weak cry from my wallet. It was the VISA card.

    "Lyc......I'm cold....so.......so....cold..."

So......it has begun. The build so far contains:
1 White Oak 18 SPR 1:7 stainless barrel
    1 White Oak A4 upper
1 White Oak bolt and carrier assembly
1 White Oak forward assist and cover kit
    1 RRA charging handle
    1 RRA lower parts kit
    1 RRA gas tube
1 RRA A2 butt stock kit
1 stripped Stag lower (with a spare on the way.....ok, I'll have the Standard gun later)

    All I need is:
a gas block (I have a 4 rail DPMS I may use or go JP adjustable)
Free float tube...I can have aluminum for $45, but a Clark Carbon fiber will go about $80 and only weigh 6oz.
    Muzzle brake.

    Tally so far.....$739.51

I could be out for under $850, but I think we'll see a top notch brake and trigger before the month is over.

If people are interested, I can post full scale step by step build pics when the lowers come in.

There is no cure for EBR disease.......

I've always wanted to learn to build an AR from scratch, just never had the time to do all the proper research, or didn't necessarily trust some of the people who might be teaching me to do it. I'd be quite interested in a step by step picture guide to the build. Sounds like a nice set up from what I know about AR's, and I look forward to seeing more.

I've been getting more into precision as of late and I'd personally love to see how this unfolds for you.

Lyc, that's funny-credit card. Where are you geting the white oak barrels, I looked on their website, couldn't understand it, and looked expensive. A little help bro.

Bushmaster has a nice DVD for this. Step by step from scratch. It tell you the tools you will need at each step. As usual you would want to review it a couble of time before starting if nothing to be sure you have all the necessary tools needed.

I bought my barrel from ADCO. It's a few dollars more than the White Oak Armament site, but I saved it in shipping. The SPR barrel is $258 and, by far, the most expensive part of the build. It's also the most important.

I'll definately have to check this dvd out, because I've been quite curious about this. Thank you very much for the recommendation rwildson. I'll also be watching for any photos that lycanthrope posts.
