Clarification on Law

I have read so much about whether someone over 18 can own a handgun in PA. I am 19 years old and interested in purchasing a glock. Some people say it is legal and some not. My question is how can i legally own a handgun in PA? I have a clean record.

You can not legally purchase a handgun in Pennsylvania because all handgun transfers must go through an FFL and an FFL can not transfer a handgun to someone under 21.

The one thing is that a handgun can be legally transferred from your grandparents or parents to you without going through an FFL.

Well I read some where that a private sale through a sherrif's department does not require the recipient to be over 21. I am just trying to get this all straight.

If I remember the statute right,,look up the UFA,, there is no need for anyone other than the parent or grand parent to get involved. They can just hand it to you. You will, however, be restricted in how you may carry it as you can't get a LTCF until you are 21.... I hope that was right, I'm tired and Christmas wrapped out...

Is there anyway for the gun to be in my name? I doubt my parents would buy the gun and keep it in there name. I am not even sure they would buy the gun and transfer it.

it either has to go through a sherriff or parent/grandparent. trouble is that most all sherriffs are unwilling to do one because they either dont want to or dont know that they can. you can find the full legal text somewhere on the site, its sticked somewhere, im just too tired to actually look it up right now. just do a search, youll find it somewhere.

unfortunately, while you are old enough for Uncle Sam to throw a Full-Auto M-16 in your hands and expect you to defend our country, all the other liberal weenies are afraid of you.

You'll pretty much just have to wait the 2 years until you are 21, get your Pistol, and get your LTCF.

Anyone telling you you can not own a handgun at 18 simply does not know the law.

In Pa. you can own a handgun at 18.
No Pa. law prohibiting 18-20 year olds from purchasing a handgun.
Per 18Pa.C.S.6111 handgun purchases must be transferred through an FFL or sheriff.
Federal law prohibits FFL's from transferring handguns to under 21 yr olds. So for a transfer of a private sale purchase you only can have the transfer done at the sheriff's office. Some sheriff's do transfers, some do not.
18Pa.C.S.6111 also exempts transfers between parents/children/grandparents. So as Dan mentioned, this is probably the easiest way to go. Purchase a handgun from your parent/grandparent or have them gift one to you. No transfer required.
