Default Holy Crap, my mother is one of THEM!

Stopped by the parents house tonight. We got into a discussion of politics, which lead to gun talk.

Long story short, my mother says she's against "assault rifles" and that NOBODY should own one because they're unnecessary. When I told her I have a few, she didn't know what to say. Then she asks me how I'd feel if someone I love got killed with one and that they should be banned. She once again didn't know what to say when I asked her what made her think criminals get their guns legally.

She just didn't get it no matter how much I explained it to her.

The best part was my father in the background saying over and over, "I want one. I want one." He always was the smarter of them both.

Start making a list of all the unnecessary things she holds dear. put into personal terms you can blow a hole in that argument. it's like the "need" argument.

If someone you love is killed by a H2 (An Assault Vehicle) Then should we ban all GM vehicles?

I guess I'll have to drag my mother to the range and let her rip through some 7.62x39. Maybe that would let her see the light.

Red face Re: Holy Crap, my mother is one of THEM!

Holy Crap, my mother is one of THEM!

This is her natural maternal instinct to nurture and care for people, and is not surprising. It's just a little narrow is all.

Many people have been indoctrinated to believe the propaganda in the liberal media. When you encounter this, ask the person if they could solve a puzzle by only viewing one side, or one set of factors. Could you solve a Rubik’s cube if you could only look at one side?

Gather the facts. Many anti-2nd amendment groups have Socialist agendas, some do not even try to hide this. Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign has even expounded their exploits in the media. I don't know if you've heard of them, there is a group called GOA at http://www.gunowners.org. Like the NRA but much more aggressive. You can find talking points on their site and others like gunfacts.com or guncite.com. Look into how to debate or argue your point effectively. Sometimes you can close people's minds to what you’re saying, just by how you're saying it. Use statements like "Were you aware that..." or "Did you know..." and interject your point. Follow up with some facts. And lastly, always remind the women, that females are the fastest growing group of firearms purchasers in the US. If someone wants to keep THEM from owing a gun, Who? Let them wonder about who that may be.

I am told there are 80,000,000 guns in this country. I think this statistic is now outdated, probably more now. Here is a link to DOJ statistic on homicide by type of weapon - http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/weapons.htm . Less than 10,000 people murdered by guns per year in the last few years. Even if you called it 10,000; for every 1 homicide gun there are 8,000 or more guns doing no harm. I bet if you pinpointed those murders on a map, and you didn't live in a massive urban center, you would have little to worry about.

Please remind your mom, that news media outlets are just that. They are engaged in the business of reporting tantalizing news stories that can move people's emotions for their profit from sponsor's advertising dollars. If they don't make a big report about some of these events their ad dollars will go to the channel that did.

This is a little uncomfortable. I'd like to say that my mother was the victim of a horrific shooting in 1980 while working as a store cashier. She was shot several times including shots to the chest and 2-3 times in the head. This attack was definitely meant to do her in. She raised my younger brother and me up after that to still be men and enjoy outdoors activity. She has said she feels uneasy around them at times, but never said for guns to be banned like some people. She got us a rifle and shotgun when we were old enough. Mom commented on how that shotgun was like the one her dad had shown her to use as a kid. If someone like her doesn’t feel gun should be banned, I can not see why people who don’t have the facts would.

Tonight pick up your Civil Defense Rifle; liberals would probably call it an automatic Assault Rifle. Think about the fallacy of “The sporting purpose.” Liberals and the government only want you to own a weapon for a sporting purpose like quail hunting. Somehow over the years THEY have decided that THE PEOPLE are only by their permission allowed to own such arms. This may be based on the fact that the colonists fought the British with muskets and Pennsylvania made “Kentucky” long rifles as compared to the Brown Bess, a smooth bore musket carried by the Brits. I think these idiots feel that THE PEOPLE should be armed with their own weapons, used privately for hunting, as in colonial times. They forget that this weapon was more technologically advanced than those of the British Military.

However, I’m getting off on a tangent here, and preaching to the choir as well. I hope your mom can reconsider her viewpoint. We need everyone we can get to vote pro-second amendment so we can take back the rights that have been infringed upon and not loose more ground.

I told my mother about my AK purchase cause I knew it'd get her riled up.(that's how we do things in my fam) She yelped and asked why and what I needed it for. I said "I don't....right now but when I do I won't be able to get it." She knows that I'm pretty hardcore about my rights and I have very broad interpretations of them. She understood at that point that I was on a long road to a mass build-up. My main thing is that I think any civilian should be able to purchase any and every single weapon the military has (yep, including Nukes.) That should put a stop to wasting taxpayer dollars on pork-contracts. I'd much rather see the population armed heavily and see NY and Jersey get mowed over until they hit PA and find out what this country is made of. No nation could withstand a ground invasion of this country(beyond the border states).

BTW, the following words came out of my mother's mouth, which started this whole discussion:

    "I'm voting for Hillary."
