Red dot sight on a rifle?
here is the question i want to mount a red dot sight on my 45/70 guide gun?
this needs to be inexpensive I found a bunch on Midway and they are said to be ideal for shotguns and handguns and muzzle loaders does this mean they are not acceptable to a rifle?
can anyone recommend a good inexpensive red dot that works on a rifle?
i want to use this for hunting so it should be of decent quality it does not need to be fancy though just a plane jane red dot.

Re: Red dot sight on a rifle?
I have a couple of these. One is mounted on a .44 mag and takes a good bit of pounding. The TASCO PDP3 with a 5 MOA red dot stays put.
Uses cr2032 coin battery which are cheap and easy to find.
On sale now at Optics Planet $84.94
http://www.opticsplanet.net/tasco-1x25n-propoint.html
Comes with 30mm rings to fit a Weaver style base.
Specs are listed below the pic.
I would not reccomend anything "cheaper" MHO.Please feel free to visit a forum that I moderate:

Re: Red dot sight on a rifle?
i am just trying to go under 100 some of these sights are ridiculous like 500 or 800 which i will just buy another gun! i only paid 325 for the rifle.
the tasco looks nice i am just concerned about the amount of recoil on the gun but i think a 44 mag handgun would be worse on the sight thanks!

Re: Red dot sight on a rifle?
The Tasco is a good one. I had one slide mounted on my Bullseye 1911. Cycling with the slide every shot, it took a beating. The only reason that I took it off was to go to a lighter sight.
Cabela - I bought one of their $60 "recoil proof" red dots to use on my T/C Contender .44 mag. It lasted only ten shots before the rheostat housing shook loose. On a rifle, though, the recoil is different and it might be OK. I put it on a .22 and it still works, even with the loose part.

Try this:
KONUS PRO 3-9x32 Zoom Illuminated
· 100% Waterproof, Fogproof,
Shockproof. Nitrogen Charged.
· Fully Multi-coated optics.
· 1/4 M.O.A. finger adjustable windage
+ elevation adjustments.
· Engraved 30/30 Illuminated Reticle.
(Heavy Caliber recoil proof reticle)
They are great and around the price you are looking for. They also have it in 3-10X40 and 3-12x50. The 45-70 is a big round but it is still very accurate at longer distances, don't under scope it. I have no problem putting 5 rounds in an inch at 100yrds with mine. -BBThe war is coming to the streets of America and if you are not keeping and bearing and practicing with your arms then you will be helpless and you will be the victim of evil.

Re: Red dot sight on a rifle?
my issue is not that i dont think the round is accurate that far i know it is the issue is were i tend to hunt i dont need the magnification because you can't get a shot at a deer farther then 40 yards and a scope with too much magnification can actually be annoying in this type of situation

Mastiff4570:
I recently acquired a 1995 SSRRH .44MAG from an acquaintance who threw a shoulder holster and an UtlraDot red dot scope into the deal.
Here's a link to the model on MidwyaUSA: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=615022
He'd been handgun hunting with it in the mountains of NEPA for years and had nothing but rave reviews about the accuracy and ease of target accquisition with this scope.
I've tried it at the range, and though I'm not the greatest shot, it delivered 2" groups off-hand at 15 yards with Winchester .44specials.
BTW, mine is the SS finish, and I got it way under current market prices.
Check out these reviews: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=615022
Though not in your price range--- it's only marginally so--- and you may find it cheaper elsewhere.
Happy red dot hunting!!
Stay well.

Re: Red dot sight on a rifle?
What is the gun used for? And what are the consequences of a miss?
If you're hunting game capable of hurting you...then I think you should get a solid red dot (aimpoint c3), or just use irons.
If the consequences of a miss are nothing to worry about, then have at the cheaper red dots.
