Default Cheap, reliable, self defense shotty. Hook me up.

I want a shotgun to keep me company next to the bed in case of the event of an unwelcomed guest in my home at night. It needs to go bang when I pull the trigger. It doesn't need to be tacticool, although I suppose a pistol grip could be advantageous for home defense. What do you guys recommend?

Mossberg 500. New, can be had for $250 or less. Reliable as any other shotty.

If money is really at a premium, you could go for the Maverick version of this gun for under $200.

The Mossberg 500 is used by a number of police departments, and is a gun that will last to hell and back. Can't go wrong with one.

i think people vastly underestimate the value of a simple double barreled coach gun as a home defense tool.

but, yeah, i like mossbergs too.

Definitely Mossberg 500 (~$300-400 new, depending on the options), or Maverick 88 (stripped down Mossberg 500, ~$200 new).

Another vote here for the Mossy 500.
It's a good HD gun at a reasonable price.

Some, but not all. Check out my favorite shotty in the "Favorite Shotgun" thread.

I saw a Dicks or Dunhams ad for a single shot, two barrel combo gun for like $90 bucks. Came with a .22 barrel and a 20 gauge barrel. Just a single shot, but if it has ejectors, you can reload relatively fast.
