I was thinking about this whilst mowing the grass. Is it possible that the bullet diameter was out of spec and got lodged in the barrel, resulting in a grenading? Did the bullet clear the barrel?

The issue as I understand it is weak brass used in the 1963/1964 runs, plus a powder that likes to break down (not sure of a function of the type of powder, or it being hot in Turkey/storage conditons). Word on some Garand sites is many, many rounds of that vintage are fine...but those that aren't, are really bad. So even if its 1 in 1000 that are bad, that 1 is a grenade
