Re: Quantity or quality?
If you look at it as a percentage basis it's still going to hold better overall value than cheap guns. For example a quick search on GunBroker for a basic Glock 19 MOS $599 new or $425 used. That is a loss of almost 30% of the value.
Looking on Gunbroker at a Scar 17 new for $3,699 or current used bid at $2,975 which lost about 20% of the value. You could say that with the Scar you're losing about $700 compared to only losing $175 on the Glock but if you had 6 Glocks in total worth $3,600 (New) you'd be losing $1,050 once you sold.

Re: Quantity or quality?
There are certainly two different ways to look at that loss, I do not deny that at all. Percentage and raw dollar.
I'm more of the person to buy just (1) used Glock at $425 than (6) new ones at $3600. And a new $500 AR15 or $1000'ish AR10(not sure what AR10's go for) instead of even a used SCAR 17 at $2975. In about 100years, after the 2A was repealed or a new federal AWB is in place, the SCAR 17 will then regain value. You might be able to find someone that just has to have one after they are out of production to pay a premium over the initial loss.
There are people here that can afford the luxury stuff and don't sweat the costs/losses. The majority of people live a less high-end life style, some of which need a reminding that the glamorous gadgets are often just that, glamorous, and the niche they fit in can be filled with less expensive kit.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Quantity or quality?
After S@ndy H00k, $300-$400 AR15s and AK47s were selling for $3,000.
$3,000 AR15s were selling for $3,000. (basically)
Your fancy-schmancy high end AR15 didn't get you $10,000 if you tried to sell it. Three grand was the general cutoff point people were willing to pay at the time.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Quantity or quality?
Not true, because I was really close to cashing in on some of my guns. SCAR*s we*re selling for over 5k and Colt AR*s were over 4K almost 5k, and that*s just a couple I remember because I was close to selling mine but decided not to.
Fwiw when I buy certain guns I have no intention on selling so I*ll spend the money on what I think is a quality gun for the money, are they worth it? That*s up to you to decide.
I have two MP5 guns, one is a MKE AP5-P that I got for around 1200, the other is a HK SP5 that I spent 3k on. Is one worth 1800.00 more than the other? To me it is, to most the 1200.00 one will do just fine.
Same with AR*s, I have 600.00 AR*s and 2200.00 AR*s and some in the middle, they all go bang, are they worth 2200.00? They are to me or I wouldn*t buy them.Today was a good day!

Re: Quantity or quality?
I look at things like that as well, I have bought many Glocks for 400.00 and under on the used market, good value for a good gun is hard to beat, this also goes for any gun if it*s something I*m looking for. Sometimes I can*t find what I want on the used market and buy new, which I have no problem as long as I get what I want. I also don*t buy with intention of selling, so I will pay more for a better quality gun. I plan on keeping it so I only have to buy it once.
Today was a good day!

Re: Quantity or quality?
Bottom line is the guns that increase in value are ones no longer made, they turn into collector guns, that*s a whole different thing. I*m no collector like that, everything I have with the exception of a couple are ones I shoot, have shot or plan on shooting.
I don*t buy with the thought of someday maybe this will be worth x amount more because it*s this brand. Sometimes it works out that way with certain guns but it*s not why I spend x amount on certain things.Today was a good day!

Re: Quantity or quality?
If I came into an absurd amount of money I would be buying transferable machineguns. Lots of them. Then destructive devices, lots of artillery pieces.
In America arms are free merchandise such that anyone who has the capital may make their houses into armories and their gardens into parks of artillery. - Ira Allen, 1796
