Default AR-15 BC - Chrome or not?

Is a chromed bolt carrier worth the extra $50? I heard that it just is a little easier to clean, but that was about all the advantage that it offered.

IMO, its not a needed item. Get a standard LMT/BCM bolt and carrier, and don't look back. I bought into the chrome carrier thing, and regretted it. After awhile, I noticed the chrome was starting to come off the carrier, which in turn was wearing on my upper receiver. I think the .mil switched to standard carriers for the same reason. Hope this helps!

Yes, the Chromed BCA is easier to clean. I think it was worth the money. It does not change the functioning of the rifle.

Is it needed? No. Is it nice? Yes. Are all chrome carriers made the same? No.

It all depends on who the manufacturer is. I'd get one from Young Mfg in a heartbeat, but wouldnt trust a chrome offering from DPMS as I've heard reports of their chroming flaking off etc.

The plus with BCM/LMT carriers is that you're getting a product that's known quality. It's shot peened, MPI'd, made to spec, and the key is staked correctly if you order it with the key.

Sure you can have any bcg/bolt MPI'd at a local car/motorscyle shop that has the equipment but you can also just get one of these.

Rough thing is that they're in high demand now.

Im currently looking into having my standard BCG TiN coated in a PVD bay at a PA based coatings company. Still mulling it over though.
