What can I expect to pay for a Garand?

I'm thinking about adding a Nagant and a Garand to my collection. What should I expect to pay for a good, shootable M1 Garand? I seem to see them on Gunbroker for anywhere from $800 to $2,500!

What do I look for in a Garand? I don't want a collector's item, I want a gun to take to the range and shoot.

For a good one expect to spend between $600. - $800.
But when spending that kind of cash make sure you know what your looking at unless you are buying from someone you trust!
A lot of high price rifles out there with shot out barrels.

See if you qualify for the CMP Garand program: ex-military or active-duty, membership in a CMP-sanctioned gun club and with modest participation in CMP-sanctioned high-power shoots.
If you do; you can get a CMP-certified 100% USGI Mil-spec Garand for under $700.00 - and now some even have non-original but brand-new stocks.

(Been awhile since I jumped thru all the hoops for my M1, so prices and particpation reqts may now differ.)

As for Nagants; every gunshow I've been to has had at least 1 vendor with a crate of 'em to choose from and usually between $50.00-$80.00. Kinda like the good old early 80's and the crates of SKS's you'd see at the shows.

#1 you must be a legal US citizen - are you?

#2 You must be legal to buy the gun - are you?

#3 do you have a carry permit? That works for the "marksmanship" proof or whatever they are calling it.

#4 Member of a CMP club??? You can join the Garand Collectors Club for $25 and that is ok with them.

It's that simple.

Yeah, what he ^ said. Don't be a sissy and come up with excusses! You want it, you now know how to get it. Git it done, period. There's other assoc's you can be a member of, like a vfw or american legion that qualify instead of cmp affiliated clubs. The hoops aren't so bad, and actually your best bet is to take a road trip out there and learn from some of the experts. It's the part of doing. So, what are waiting for?

If you are a LEO or prior LEO....or military or ex military, you dont have to jump through the hoops.

If you are not/ were never a cop or military, you will need to belong to a CMP club such as the Garand collectors club for $25.

A carry permit works for the marksmanship proof. So will a score card from any certified pistol/ rifle match. hell, I think a sporting clays score card counts if I'm not mistaken.

Buying a CMP rifle is not that hard...and their garands are nice for the money!

Good point. I know you're on the other side of the state, but a road trip to the north store is quite an experience, especially the info you get from the folks working there helping you find the rifle just for you. Good luck.
