Deer Processing around Pittsburgh

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody!

I hope to get my first deer this rifle season. I live in Squirrel Hill and would like to get some suggestions for a good local processor in the Pittsburgh area.

I don't think my neighbors with their Obama signs still up want me to cut it up on the front porch.

I can get Kip's and S&S phone(S&S PH # 693 9353 -not sure if it is 412 or 724) #'s if you like.

Kip is in Carnegie not far from the I-79/Carnegie exit.

I have had deer processed at both locations with no problems.

I'll second Kip's, used him in the past myself and most of my friends who hunt use him. Good turnaround and reasonable prices. Hope to be visiting him myself this year after a 7 year break from hunting.

Thank you for the suggestions. Now that I'm thinking about this I really don't know too much about using these services. Do I need to call ahead of time or do I just show up? Will they make cuts and grinds? What is the ball park price?

Bear,

Final cost will be determined on the cuts and options you choose.

I have them package the Tenderloins.

I get butterfly chops cup (4 to a pack)
I get as much meat cut for jerky as they can.

I have beef fat added to the ground and sometimes get a roast or 2 cut.

Some guys like sausage made and other options like finished jerky.

The cost has escalated quite a bit over the past few years and my cost is ballpark at $75 or so.

Usually when I bring a deer, they will ask for specific instructions at that time.

Call ahead to get an idea of what it will run you based on what you want done. Kip used to have a pricing guide coupled with a chart on how much meat to expect out of the dressed weight of the deer. Not sure if that is still done.

If you decide to go with Kip, I would suggest you try the Trail Bologna, Hot Sausage and Kielbasa. Definately winners in my book. As was previously said, $75 would be about average depending on your options. Kip never really had hours to speak of, I've always just showed up and dropped off the deer. Maybe I was lucky and able to catch someone there.

I used to do quite a bit of my own butchering within the City of Pittsburgh. I was even joking with my dad last night that I should get into deer butchering. If the going rate is $75 a pop, it's not a bad idea. Incidentally, if you ever want to learn to do basic butchering, drop me a line.
