    Default Straw Purchases

I'm not quite what is considered a Straw purchase, and certainly don't won't to run afoul of the law. I know that buying a gun and giving/selling it to a prohibited person is illegal.

What I'm wondering is, if I buy a gun to give to another person that I can legally give a gun to, is that considered an illegal straw purchase?

For example. I had been considering buying a gun for my grandson for Christmas. He is over 21 and not a prohibited person. Since I am allowed to give him a gun directly without going thru a dealer, can I also buy a gun at a retailer and "gift" it to him without breaking any laws?

    Thanks for any clarification.

    IMO, that's not a straw purchase. That's a gift.

They've recently added two poorly worded questions to the 4473. I would refer to the expert.

As far as I know a straw Purchase is when you purchase a firearms for a prohibited person.
Buying then gifting to a non-prohibited person should be fine. If it is that big of a deal take him tot he shop, have HIM fill out the paperwork and you just pay the bill.

    While waiting for GunLawyer ....

My local FFL told me clearly that buying a gun for another person is a straw purchase regardless of whether the eventual recipient can or cannot legally own a gun. That does not seem logical in my mind.

I dont think it is logical, but I could be wrong. Most likely not as I have a internet win10 law license.

You know, you can avoid all this straw purchase nonsense by simply bringing your grand daughter to the gun store and having her fill out the forms.

What if he wants to gift it as a surprise?
