You need to pick the right kind of sponge pieces - the ones that are more hole filled/fuzzy are best for more "spotty" application.

I just sprayed the paint onto paper plates, dabbed the sponges, and starting with one color at a time, began to go over my first attempt, making some areas wider, and dabbing one color over the next along where each color meets.
The lightest color was applied last and I tried to put it next to the darkest green to create a strong contrast area.
I probably could have stopped applying the light color sooner, but overall, I think it turned out well.

Sort of a woodland tiger stripe sort of thing.
    Looks really good.
Sticks and stones will break my bones but hollow points expand on impact.

Looks good, EM! I'd be tempted to drag it through that gravel a little to give it a battle worn look on top of the camo!

    Haha!
Well, my initial plan would have given it a worn look.
In the Arizona Response Systems video (part 2) he shows how he uses Scotch Brite pads to scuff off some paint in the high wear areas.
With as much paint as I have on there now, I'd need a grinding disc! LOL

Gonna do my other 7.62x39 rifle with the same colors.
I'll take what I learned and modify my application - probably make the color blocks wider for more effective camouflage vs what we think "looks cool". Instead of applying it with a brush, I'll spray the main bands of color, then use the sponge paint technique again to give it a similar style.

Time will tell if I work up the nerve to do my x39 pistol in the same manner.
I wanted all of them to look similar so I know without looking that they are x39 guns.
Right now my method of quick visual ID is to have brown slings on all x39 guns.

Since I can't get any more of this Aervoe paint, I'll switch to another color palette for the 5.56 family.
I'll probably look into Brownell's Alumahyde paint. Lots of colors and more durable than Rustoleum.
