Idk what your definition of "out of the fight" is but bleeding profusely and leaving for medical treatment is out of the fight to me..... 20+ yd with birdshot isn't ideal but less than 20ft would have been way worse.

He had backup and support. But if he hadn't and was fighting for his life, he could have kept going I would think. Sure his bell was rung but he knew what was going on, and even drove himself to the hospital.

At 10 feet, a 1 oz #8 shot trap load through a full choke, would make a devastating quarter sized hole in someone.

At 20 yards, not so much.
