Changing AR-15 buttstock?
I'd like to install a collapsable stock on my AR. Can anyone point me to some directions on how it's done?

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
I'll assume you've got a A2 or facsimilie buttstock on your EBR now.
-First break it down to seperate upper and lower receivers.
-Then press the springloaded retaining detent down and remove the buffer and recoil spring from the buffer tube.
-Then unscrew the rear of the stock from the rear of the tube being careful not to let the safety detent spring fly out.
-Unscrew the buffer tube from receiver being careful to not let the buffer retaining detent to fly out under spring pressure.
-Screw in the buffer tube into the receiver.
-Place the safety detent spring in the receiver and hold it down with the backing plate.
-Screw the castle nut to down to hold the backing plate on to the receiver and hold the safety detent spring in. You'll need a special wrench for this.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
Not much to add, dsmonsta is pretty much dead on. You will also want to make sure you know if your new buffer tube is milspec or commercial dimensions, I personally recommend milspec cause most manufacturers will manufacture to that in addition to any wierd commercial sizes they may have. THis way you will be able to keep your options open and easily change out stocks. Also consider wether you will want a sling loop or attachment point there cause if you're pulling the tube anyway it's gonna be the easiest time to stick one on. THe only other thing I have to add is that after dsmonsta's procedures you get a punch and stake the castlenut in place to prevent itself working it's way loose.

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
If you have an A2 buttstock, and you are changing to a collapsible one, you will need a new buffer tube in carbine length, as well as a new carbine length action spring and a carbine buffer (heavy if you have a carbine length gas system). Because of the need for a buffer tube and a castle nut wrench raise the cost of a cheap collapsible stock... I was able to convince myself to get the more expensive Magpul UBR stock. The UBR comes with its own buffer tube and the way it installs doesn't need a castle nut either.
Save a little money on components for the stock, buy a better stock.

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
That's a nice stock. On my latest build I went with a DPMS Pardus 6 pos stock from Midway. THey had it on sale for under $50 and it comes with everything but the buffer. $10 for the carabine buffer and I was GTG. How does the UBR attach? I was looking at that and the CTR but decided against them since I have a tight budget for this build. YOu don't need a special wrench for the castle nut, a brass punch or rod and a hammer will do just fine. I think you can find the wrenches for about $10 or less though.

This site here does a great job of showing how the install is done for the UBR, part-by-part: http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum...read.php?p=314

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
The gun in question is an Olympic Arms K16, which is a 16" carbine with an A2 stock. I'm leaning towards the DPMS Pardus stock. Do I need any other parts?

Re: Changing AR-15 buttstock?
I have one that came brand new on my gun maybe 2 weeks ago. I'd like to go with a magpul UBR or CTR I think. If you are going to buy one anyway. This one is basically new. I've fired the gun twice. Other than that its sat in a hard case.
The worst encounter it had was being pressed up to a sweatshirt.
-edit-
Nevermind, you'd still need the tube, and nut and stuff.Last edited by Asmodeus6; November 20th, 2008 at 08:57 PM.
