Default Close range (less than 50 yards) AR optics?

I'm going to set up on of my AR's as a tactical shoot/three gun type of gun, with the capability for short and long range shots, i.e. a red dot/holo sight of some sort, as well as a scope. Now, I'm thinking a scope on top and a red dot off to the side at a 45 degree or so angle would be ideal. Here's my questions:

    1. Aimpoint or Eotech? What makes one a better choice than another?

    2. Who makes a mount that allows for mounting a red dot/eotech cocked off to the side of the rail/handguard?

I "hear" people like the eotech because of there being less "surrounding" stuff than the aimpoints, but that may be what I want to read because I just got an eotech.

I just ordered a new eotech and think I got a pretty good deal on it... I'll PM you the info.

As far as mounts - http://www.danieldefense.com/?page=s...product_id=113 - this seems to be what you'd be looking for. There are also mounts that will put a red dot on top of any scope with a 30mm or 1" tube. One of the irondot/burris fastfire style MRDs will work on a side-mount like that.

That mount looks right , but would it be large enough for an EOtech?

I found this while flipping through the threads at ar15.com These are mini red dots that sit on the side of the scope.

Not sure what your idea of "long Range" is but, how about a (flip to the side) 3-4X magnifier for an Eotech instead?

    I agree.
You can mount an Eotech, and a Aimpoint magnifier behind it for long distance.
And for CQB you can flip the magnifier to the side, and use the Eotech as your main.

This is just an example, but you get the idea (click on the video presentation)http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...ail.bok?no=131

well at that range, hell yeah, you need something a little more powerful....
You need a Night Force scope....Awesome for precision shooting.

I would recomend an eotech on top, no scope. Eotech has the smallest center dot ( 1 moa) than any other on the market. And install an open sight at a 45 degree angle for the really close shots. You say your long range shots will be 500 yds, I haven't done alot of 3 gun but I really doubt you'll have to shoot that far, however you will probably shoot at much smaller targets out to 100yds. which is why you'd want the smallest dot.
