I would have to say an M44 because:

    built like a tank

cheap as hell (and cheap ammo)

    decent accuracy

and did I say built like a tank?

Any rifle that still works and hits what it aims at after 50+ years is AOK in my book (besides the flame it shoots is just cool as hell)

Basically, there were only three widely deployed "battle rifles" in 7.62 x51

    1. M14

    2. FN-FAL / L1A1

    3. G3

All are capable of "minute of torso" accuracy at combat ranges, and all have their adherents and detractors.

If you want outright maximum accuracy, your best choice is an AR-10 or some similar Stoner varient, despite the fact that it isn't a "battle rifle." KAC SR25s are deployed, but that would be about it; I don't think andy of the few countries that adopted the AR-10 as an infantry arm still uses it.

I also have a great deal of fondness for the Italian BM-59. Far softer shooting and controlable in FA, thanks to the very long tri-comp.

ahh, just noticed that ... I have this tendency to read something (esp numbers) and then come back an hour later and see something completely different.

Well I would have to say the G3/H&K 91.
    Solid, reliable, Accurate, and adaptable.

    Weighs a lot though.

    1. Google FAL Torture Test. And also Google "FAL Ol'Dirty"
(10k+ and 15k+ rounds without cleaning, one or two malfunctions tops)

    2. See point "1". The fal is way easier to break down than any other rifle I've ever seen. You basically just move a lever, and the rifle breaks in half. Doesn't get easier than that.

    3. Battle rifles are not tack-drivers, but I'd say the FAL is probably only second to the G3/Cetme. And then again the difference is barely noticeable.

    1. Roger that, it's the AK of battle rifles (FAL that is), super easy to work on and keep running.

    2. Agreed. The G3 and M14 aren't too bad there either, but the FAL really is super easy to strip and maintain IMHO.

    3. It all depends on how much money you throw at it. The m14 can be made into a real tack driver for less $$$ than the FAL or G3 can, though the real G3 is said to be pretty damn accurate out of the box and so are DSA FALs (as well as a kit gun built by someone with some skill).

Optics are easier to mount on the FAL, M14 is a pain in that area IMHO.

Iron sights, I'd say the M14 is the best, followed by the G3 design with the FAL in last place (but definitely still usable).

There's always a .308 AK-style gun (Saiga), but the sights aren't that great, it's not going to be as accurate as a good example of any of the others, but it will be easily as reliable, if not more so than the rest.

But, as Synergy said, what you want it for and what you want out of it would be helpful in really answering this question.
