Re: Best battle rifle chambered in .308/7.62x51
M14
1. Reliability - proven design (not that the FAL & G3 are not)
2. Durability and ease of repair - fast and easy to pull apart, simple.
3. Accuracy - irons cant be beat on these.

Re: Best battle rifle chambered in .308/7.62x51
I would think the FAL and G3 certainly have it beat in terms of reliability...although all three represent outstanding options.
Ease of repair? Honestly, I think the other 2 options listed are more straightforward and simple...but maybe that's because I've torn into HK guns more than the average joe...
Accuracy...is the box stock m1a really any more accurate than the g3/91? I know its a good shooter, but I hear the HK is too....I've never shot either side by side, nor am I really a good enough shot to even notice the difference personally. Both actions have high-end counter-sniper rifles built upon them...I'd wager it's probably a draw.
FWIW, I'd opt for a FAL were I to have to choose a "battle rifle". I personally rather have a 5.56 carbine with a 1-4x optic, and a bolt action .308 for the long stuff.
For where .308 really shines over 5.56mm...I think the differences between a semi and a bolt in terms of your ability to take out a threat, favor the bolt. Out to 300 yards...I don't have a problem with 5.56mm.
