The only law against a <21yo buying a handgun is by federal law that regulates FFL transfers and only FFL transfers.
So a sheriff does not have an FFL?

Sheriff says: "Yes you can, but you may not!"

Another instance of the law saying one thing, reality saying another...

/unless of course your Daddy's the sheriff!

no. he dont need one because he's not in the business of selling firearms. all he does is the PICS call and fills out the PSP form for state regulations on handguns.

But... our sheriff in JeffCo does have a FFL because he's also a dealer for his own business.

Good info, and a fall up question-

If the parent gifts the handgun, does the parent still risk any legal liability from that handgun if something should happen?

Good question. Hopefully one of the lawyers will see it.

Thanks for the input all, pretty much as expected. I know this is one of those questions that's eternally asked/answered, but I just wanted to clarify this issue for myself - since I had specifically asked the deputy if it was legal/possible at all, not whether they would do one for me or not. Anyways, guess I'll just wait for now, since I'm turning 21 in a few months. Not worth the hassle of dealing with my local sheriffs office.

    Edit:
Finally found someone helpful within the department. Thanks for your help everyone
