difference between 45 pistol&pellet rifle ?

for anyone who puts stock in what the news people say , I was just watching the noon JOHNSTOWN news and they were talking about someone firing several rounds into a house . said police were unsure if it was a 45 pistol or a pellet rifle.

Must have been one large pellet gun to be confused with a 45... Potato gun maybe? I'm looking at a pellet, then at a 45 long colt... did anyone actually look at the hole?

Let's look at some recent testing using a fill of 2700 psi and a 180-grain roundnose bullet.

Shot 1: 704 fps
Shot 2: 673 fps
Shot 3: 649 fps
Shot 4: 634 fps
Shot 5: 520 fps

180 grains at 700 fps. Not too shabby!

But yeah, the 45 vs. pellet gun thing is pretty silly. I could see the conversation going like this -
reporter: what kind of gun did they use?
police: we're not sure yet/can't comment/not telling
reporter: well was it a pistol, a rifle, a 45, a 22, a pellet gun...?
police: like i said, we don't know yet.

reporter writes the headline you see above.

I heard that on the radio this morning when I woke. "Could have been a 45 caliber pistol or BB gun".

I was like, "WTF!?" how do they even come close to matching??

I try to remember these things when i read or see a news story accusing someone .. They don,t always get it right .
