Pittbsurgh Lost/Stolen Gun Ordinance
hey there fellow yinzers...
the pittsburgh city council is going to consider a lost and stolen firearms ordinance at next Tuesday's council meeting. i am going to try to attend and voice my opinion that i do not want my tax dollars being wasted fighting the inevitable lawsuit that will result (and they will lose) if they pass this ordinance.
let's learn from philly's mistakes instead of having to waste our money as well.
attending the meeting and/or writing to the council members voicing opposition would be great...especially for anyone who, like me, is a city resident. your tax dollars are going to be wasted as well.
here is the NRA alert about it.
Pittsburgh City Council to Consider Anti-Gun Ordinance on
Tuesday, November 18!
Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voice Heard!
On Tuesday, November 18, the Pittsburgh City Council could vote on an anti-gun ordinance that would require gun owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within a 72-hour period or face fines and possible imprisonment.
At the request of the Pittsburgh City Council, several anti-gun speakers have been asked to attend this meeting for discussion purposes. One of those speakers is gun control advocate State Representative David Levdansky (D-39). Similar legislation, sponsored by Representative Levdansky, was defeated in the state legislature earlier this year.
This proposed ordinance would violate Pennsylvania’s state preemption statutes which dictate that only the state can enact further firearms regulations. It would victimize law-abiding gun owners a second time by penalizing those who unknowingly fail to report the theft or loss of a firearm.
The Pittsburgh City Council will consider this ordinance at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18 in the City Council Chambers on the 5th Floor of the City County Building located at 414 Grant Street in Pittsburgh.
Please attend and proudly show your support for the Second Amendment and your opposition to this illegal attack on our rights. If you cannot attend, please contact the members of the City Council and respectfully urge them to stand up for your Second Amendment rights and oppose this measure. Re: Pittbsurgh Lost/Stolen Gun Ordinance
Why can't they enforce the criminal law and quit going after gun owners?

Re: Pittbsurgh Lost/Stolen Gun Ordinance
I don't know if I'll be able to attend the meeting, but I emailed the councilman for my district.
In my eyes, this ordinance effectively lets the gov't bypass the traditional rule of "presumed innocent until proven guilty". Normally, if a criminal gets his hands on a gun registered to me recorded in the database as being sold to me, then the burden is on the gov't to prove that I illegally supplied it to him. Under the proposed ordinance, if a thief sneaks into my home and steals a firearm of mine, then I'm effectively presumed guilty of supplying it to him unless I preemptively prove my innocence by filing a police report. So not only does this ordinance infringe the right to bear arms, it also compromises a core principle of our system of law.
