Default Nightstand pistol: Glock 17 or Glock 21?

17+1 rounds of 9mm goodness or 13+1 rounds of .45 ACP smackdown?

This would be for home defense exclusively. A big, fat, heavy mutha with integrated light/laser riding on the rail.

    Not interested in other caliber/platform.

    What say you?

9mm has been killing people just fine for plenty of years, the only reason everyone has a boner (well not everyone as I dont) for .45acp is because its the "American Freedom rounds". Also, "stopping power" is a bunch of horseshit. Just get a 9mm with some modern-design hollow points and add your laser, light rail and roller coster to it and call it a day.

Just my opinion, but I would go with the Glock 21 .45acp. I think 14 rounds is enough to get nearly every home defense job done. That's just my opiniong and that's what I would use if I had both to choose from.

I would def go with the 21. I have shot my GF's father's and I really liked it. Will probably be my next purchase. I already have the 9mm (G19)

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I am less concerned with the classic 9mm vs. .45 ACP debate than aggregate round count. I.e. all other things being equal, would the extra 4 rounds afforded by the 9mm be a slight advantage over having to reload after 14 rounds of .45 ACP. (God forbid I ever need to find out.)

My rational side says no, but my mall ninja, Team America side says more rounds, more gooder.

If you need 14 rounds to incapacitate someone who is only about 10 feet away (im assuming your bedroom door isn't 25 yards away from your bed) then you have more important things to worry about than picking between 45 and 9mm.

My suggestion is to go with the gun you shoot better, and feel more comfortable with. If you dont have a 12ga shotgun already for home defense, get one now since they are much more suitable for home defense than a pistol. A pistol is for fighting your way to your shotgun.

Also, thanks for getting a Glock, I am tired of everyone saying you need a SA Super Operator 1911 to defend yourself. 1911s are for pistol matches, not self defense (I KID I KID!)

Just make sure you read my thread from about February or so about my GLOCK on my nightstand

(not relevant, but amusing read if you didn't see it)

45, statistically you don`t even need half of what`s in the mag. And the 45 vs 9 debate. Well think of how many gang bangers you read about that walk in E-wards or flee after being hit by a 9. I can`t remember reading that about a 45.
