    Default 0000 steel wool

I buy any guns that are "a little rough" when I can get a deal. My favorite "tools" are 0000 steel wool and oxpho blue. If a gun has value potential, I don't use oxpho but always 0000 wool. I have heard some say "oh no, never use 0000 it damages the finish" - I say fooey ! lol. Stuff is awesome. Here's a Marlin lever action I picked up "rough" cheap a few weeks back before and after with 0000 and some good oil. Love seeing deals on surface rust guns

Lots of oil and change wool when red. Rust will grind the blue off.

Yes, I use lots of oil and change wool often. Does amazing work. And if I'm not worried about value at all - oxpho blue is hands down the best cold blue out there! It's amazing. I've shown skeptics some of the work I've done with it and they've been impressed. I've used other cold blues and they were crap, but oxpho = A1!
    Thanks!

It's a must have on my gun bench. I rescued a neighbors Browning rifle after he stored it for the ENTIRE deer season in a foam padded gun case in the back seat of his truck.

Yep, has helped me clean up many a gun when I couldn't afford better. Or just didnt care it had rust/knew I could clean up.

Would just say watch the sharper edges...that's where you're most likely to cut through the bluing.

And don't even get me started with Oxpho! Here's a Ballester Molina I did many years back before and after a little work with 0000 and oxpho If I had bought the gun recently, I probably wouldn't have used oxpho but I got it so cheap years back I gave it a whirl:

I know - I have issues. I don't do drugs, I don't drink much any more, quit smoking 30 years ago - gotta have a hobby!

Thought I might add as preventative measures
    1 sackups. They work
    2 RIG rust inhibiting grease
    3 birchwood Casey Shield
    4 silicone gun rags
5 hoppies lubricating oil with weather guard
    6 renaissance wax

I tend to go with 00000 steel wool for such purpose.

I use 0000 for de-whiskering wood stocks as I (re)finish them. I ran into a batch of 0000 years ago that did do some scratching. ...might have been a bad batch(harder metal mix??) or something, but it stuck in my mind ever after.
