Default "license" to buy ammo at Wal-Mart

Stopped at the Harrisburg Wal-mart last night to buy some 9mm ammo

I have been only buying ammo there with cash for a while now. Dumb arse kid said he needed to see my license to buy ammo..... I'm freaking 50 with gray hair, refused and told him to call his manager.

Manager said it's company policy.... showed them my "license" to carry firearms in PA. He approved it.

Company policy my eye... I've purchased ammo at three different Wal-Marts in the Allentown area and never was asked for id.

If you were really that peeved, you should have replied with "It's my policy to not patronize stores that insult my intelligence," and left without buying anything.

I usually get ID'ed when I go to walmart to buy ammo, then again im only 23.
No gun shop has ever asked me for ID.

I'm going to have to remember that quote, funny and sharp!
"Apparent consent" is a great example of legal precedent that irrationally circumvents the 4th Amendment. This policy encourages sloppy police work by assuring officers that their mistakes will inevitably be forgiven in court. The idea that police can render their own actions legal simply by genuinely believing them to be is incompatible with the general legal principle that ignorance is not an excuse for error.

for info...heres the ATF FAQ with the relevant law sections on age requirements for dealers, AND law on "interchangeable" ammunition...with so many pistol caliber carbines available, from lever guns to semis, almost ALL handgun ammo will pop up with a Rifle/Pistol Y/N" indicator on thier register:

    http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#f6

(F6) Does a customer have to be a certain age to buy firearms or ammunition from a licensee? [Back]

Yes. Under the GCA, long guns and long gun ammunition may be sold only to persons 18 years of age or older. Sales of handguns and ammunition for handguns are limited to persons 21 years of age and older. Although some State and local ordinances have lower age requirements, dealers are bound by the minimum age requirements established by the GCA. If State law or local ordinances establish a higher minimum age, the dealer must observe the higher age requirement.

(F7) May a licensee sell interchangeable ammunition such as .22 cal. rimfire to a person less than 21 years old? [Back]

Yes, provided the buyer is 18 years of age or older, and the dealer is satisfied that it is for use in a rifle. If the ammunition is intended for use in a handgun, the 21-year-old minimum age requirement is applicable.

I've bought ammo in 3 different Wal Marts up here and you don't even pay for it at the ammo counter. Throw it in the wagon and pay for it with the rest of your stuff, like a grocery item. (well isn't it)

I was asked once when buying handgun ammo....."is this for a handgun". My reply was "I dunno".

Ah, living up in the NW is.....well....paradise.

Buying ammo in Wal Mart, for the gun you're O/Cing in Wal Mart, priceless.
