    Default Good Salsa Recipe anyone?

I know that years ago when I had looked at the Weight Watchers points list, salsa carried no points. I love salsa and I see it as a good way to snack (although regular tortilla chips aren't the best thing for ya).

I wouldlike to find a recipe because I don't really like the store bought stuff. What I like is what they give you while you wait for your food at a mexican restaraunt. chunks of tomato, onion, and peppers without the "sauce". The only liquid in it seems to be clear, I assumed just water from the veggies.

I have seen some recipes and they call for tomato paste. Can I just go with that and leave out the paste? Or does someone have a good recipe.

Not too hot though, my wife like salsa too and she won't eat hot, sucks I know.

Another reply without answering the question being asked. Sorry but I do want to say that you should make yours spicy. Have her make her own batch. Why? Well, 1: It's gonna make you sweat and since you're trying to lose weight, that's not a bad thing. 2: It's going to curb your appetite. It's like being super hungry and eating a hot pepper. Not so hungry now, are you? 3: There's capsacin in peppers and it's supposed to be pretty good for you. Something with the prostate as well I think.

    Agreed.

Bring on the heat. She like that Tostitos brand salsa anyway.

    Easy on the Habeneros though.

In the summer, my wife and I grow tomatoes and a few varieties of peppers in a small "garden". We take the tomatoes and chop 'em up in some sort of "as-seen-on-TV" gadget with the peppers and some lime juice, cilantro and other spices. Sometimes we use the "salsa" over grilled chicken or fish and sometimes with chips.

The best part is that you can control what goes into it. I'll ask my wife if she remembers how we make it. I think its more trial and error than an actual recipe, but I'll ask.

This is my personal secret family recipe, but hey we're all friends here right? I use 2 nice sized tomatoes, 1 yellow onion(yellow is key here, you don't want a sweeter white onion, 1 or 2 jalapeno peppers, juice from 1 lime, 1/8 - 1/4 tsp of sea salt and about 2 - 3 Tbsp cilantro.

Start by cutting the tomatoes in half across the stem end, you can then shake/rinse the seeds out. Then cut them into small, not tiny, chunks. Cut the onion into chunks about the same size as tthe tomatoes. Now depending on how hot you want it to be you can either cut the jalapeno(s) into small chunks, almost diced, leaving the seeds in or if you want it milder cut the pepper length wise and remove the seeds before cutting it up. Add the lemon juice and the sea salt and stick it in the fridge for about a half an hour. My friends and family love it.

I got the following from Alton Brown's Good Eats show. I've not had a bad recipe from that man yet. Enjoy

    Salsa

    Roma tomatoes, chopped
    4 garlic cloves, minced
2 seeded and minced jalapenos, plus 2 roasted, skinned and chopped jalapenos
1 red bell pepper, fine dice
    1/2 red onion, fine chopped
2 dry ancho chiles, seeded, cut into short strips and snipped into pieces
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1 lime, juiced
Chili powder, salt, and pepper, to taste
Fresh scallions, cilantro or parsley, to taste

In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Place in refrigerator for up to 12 hours for flavor infusion. Serve with tortilla chips.

And remember you can control heat by removing the white membrane and the seeds from the peppers.
