Small, affordable, lightweight

Looking for something to fit the above for self defense, as a first time concealed permit holder.

What is your preference, revolver or semi-auto? I am a wheel gun fanatic myself so I would steer you toward a .38 special. There are several for sale in the classified section of this forum. I carry a S&W 442 most of the time and there is a great deal on one of those right now. If you don't think you would like that or it's to much money you should look for a used lightweight taurus revolver.

Now if it's semi-autos that you like i would recommend spending a little more money and getting a quality handgun such as Glock, Sig, or HK. The springfield xd series are very good guns and I've heard good things about the S&W M&P series too.

A great question I don't necessarily have an answer to yet. Based on my rifles, I would guess semi-auto.

Glock 28 - small lightweight reliable. Kel-tec 380 - small lightweight, cheap, needs a little work to be reliable. These guns fit in your gun hand pocket so your hand is on the gun when in uncomfortable situations without an adversary knowing it- They are that small, lightweight, good. DO NOT trust that Kel-tec until you can burn a couple hundred rounds without a jam / misfeed. If you can't get it reliable by the smithing advice you can get online, send it back to Kel-tec and it'll come back a much better gun. The Glock starts out good, but is twice the money. I personally like the light weight / small size of the little autos, but one poster was right about ultimate reliability of revolvers. It comes down to what you want to carry and if that thing is pulling your pants down with its weight, you won't carry. You guys need a permit to carry a sidearm? ...It is starting...

It's not a permit, it's a license. We can carry openly without one until you have to get into a car really.

The whole country pretty much has some such of an equivalent except for you alaskan folks (no restrictions) and those illinoisians who can't even carry legally.

That isnt a result of obama though, we've had those for years.

Glock 26 - 9MM, small, light weight, 10 +1, reliable to a fault. Can be carried IWB or out, or in a ankle holster (if your pant legs aren't to tight). You can pick up a used one in the $350-$399 range.
