    Default URGENT: AR advice needed

I found a Colt 6700 at a good price. I'm thinking about buying it today before someone else gets it.

What I really want is something carbine length. I've heard that some Colt lowers have a different hole size than whatever the common size is, thus making installing other companie's uppers difficult. Does anyone know if this is true of the 6700? How can I tell if this is the case with this particular rifle?

Does it matter? Could I just change the barrel, handguard, etc.? I don't want to buy it if I'm going to be stuck with a 20" heavy barrel.

Obviously I don't know much about ARs.

    Thanks!

You should be able to change out uppers without any problem even if it has the large holes. They make adaptors to rectify that. I know Bushmaster makes them and I'm sure several other companies do too.

A full-size AR has very nice balance and a standard sight radius. Don't count it out.

Uppers can be swapped as can barrels. Go for it!

I did! Actually, I put $300.00 down on it. I'll be paying it off next week.

I didn't phrase my OP all that well.

I wasn't sure if I'd be able to swap uppers easily. I didn't want to buy a rifle that couldn't be reconfigured to suit my whims. I won't be buying another rifle for quite awhile so I wanted to be sure I'd be getting the modularity that I find so attractive in ARs. Now I start looking at upper halves!

Well, I was going to pay the balance next week but I just couldn't wait. Brought it home a few minutes ago! I can't stop grinning!

    Most definitely!

Is there anything other than a good cleaning and lube that I should do before firing my new rifle?

I have a 6700C. It has served me well. You will be happy with your new purchase. Congrats.
