What's the police academy like?
So I always hear how the Police Academy is physically rigorous and you have to be in top notch shape to make it though. Why then do I consistently see officers that have to be pushing 300 pounds? Just wonderin'!

Probably cause they let themselves go after the academy. I imagine its a lot like the movies with Mahoney and his pals pulling pranks on Captain Harris.

I would think that departments would make officers re-certify periodically from a physical fitness standpoint. Maybe not though?

No, you don't have to recertify your PT requirements. The actual requirements are posted on the net if you want to check them out. Honestly, it's in their best interest to stay in shape when you think about it but I guess some of them don't see it that way. I think more and more of them these days are seeing it that way and making it a point to stay in shape though. I mean, criminals are getting smarter, braver, and starting to outnumber us... (of course, we keep cutting them breaks and letting them out of prison )

Why? One word.....DONUTS.
I had a relative that was an FBI agent that made Chris Farley look thin. I honestly could not figure this one out either.
I think physical fittness should be a requirement. I'd like to know that the cop can run and apprehend a suspect. Particularly if that person just got done breaking into my house or something.
I'd be pissed if some fatassed gastropod with a badge walked up to me huffing and puffing and said " I....(huff).....am..(puff)..sorry....(huff)....he. ....(puff).....got.....away."

Ok but seriously, they aren't ALL like that. Some of them DO stay in shape (even though it's not required) and they do their job well.

Back in the 60s I went to the D.C. Metro police Acadmy and the Camden NJ Academy and every day you had to run 1 mile and 2 miles about a week before graduation, You had to box twice a week 3 rounds each time and if you were good at it you had to box every guy in the class one after another till you got beat.
As far as academics you had to be a real dullerd to fail.
