    This might be even better. Saves me money for good glass.

    I would go with a bolt gun. Inherently more accurate.
    Another benefit to the .243/6mm/and probably .260 over the super hot .22's is that they don't tend to wear out barrels like the .22's do. At least that's what I heard.

    Exclamation Re: Best long range rifle caliber?

    Best? Or best that's widely available for the money? This could go on a LOT of different tangents. Here's the short answer to both, off the top of my head;

    1) Money-is-no-object-answer - .50 (and get a Barrett)
    2) On-a-budget-answer - .308 (and get an FAL)

    The .260 is intriguing. Who makes a bolt gun in .260? The only two I've seen are Remington and Ruger, and I'm not really a fan of either of their guns.

    I agree with koli01, i would def. stick with a bolt action. i know my pops has a 6mm br and thats thing is really accurate (but its a custom), I like the looks and especially the good reviews of those tikka t3's, you could get one of those in .243, .308, .22-250, anything really they are priced around $500-$800 (depending on what model obviously) but they say those guns can really shoot well, they come with a 1 MOA 3 shot group @ 100 (not sure if thats for every caliber, i just remember reading that about the .270's), if i had my deer rifle to do over again i would have got a tikka, but like i said ive never shot/owned one

    .223/5.56 will fly that far, but wont have power to do much other than punch a hole in paper.

    Anybody can zip a flatshooter with a scope.

    If you're into skilled shooting, try lobbing in some 300-720gr .458 slugs from a 45-70, 45-90, 45-100, 45-110 or 45-120 rifle. ...you'd be surprised how accurate a rainbow arc'd slug can be.

    Its the closest you can come to artillery without joining the army or having your own blackpowder cannon.

    Not the best choice for 500 yards and out. It's a battle rifle, not a precission rifle.
