RECALL NOTICE: Impala, Regal, Grand Prix, Intrigue replacement steering shaft
Posting this for the good of the order...
I have a 2000 Impala and had the Intermediate Steering Shaft replaced a few months ago. I just got this recall notice....apparently, the replacement shafts from Dorman Products are bad and are being recalled:
Dear Customer:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
This is a Recall Notice: Dorman Products has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain intermediate steering shafts. As a result of this determination, Dorman Products is recalling Dorman Part Nos. 425-151, 425-152, and 425-153, (sold under Dorman’s “OE Solutions™” brand name), NAPA #’s 7-3057, 7-3058, 7-3059 (sold under the “NAPA™” brand name), and Platinum Parts #’s 2425151, 2425152, and 2425153 which were sold for use on the following General Motors makes and models:
Only intermediate steering shafts with the part numbers stated above sold under the OE Solutions™ brand are included in this recall.- Dorman # MAKE MODEL YEAR 425-151 BUICK REGAL 2004-99 425-151 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO 2005-00 425-151 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE 2002-98 425-152 CHEVROLET IMPALA 2005-00 425-153 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 2005-95 425-153 PONTIAC SUNFIRE 2005-95
Defect: These intermediate steering shafts are comprised of an inner tube and outer tube. In assembly, the inner tube is placed inside the outer tube then the two are welded together. When the steering wheel is turned, torque is transferred through the steering shaft to the steering axle. If the welds that connect the tubes are inadequate, the welds may fail and loss of steering may occur without warning.
Remedy: Dorman Products wishes to recover as many of these parts as possible. Dorman believes that you currently have or have previously owned a motor vehicle in which one of these parts was installed. For this reason we ask that you arrange for your dealer or independent automotive repair facility to replace this part without delay. Dorman will reimburse you for parts and labor, incurred by you to replace this part with a General Motors replacement part in accordance with General Motors service procedures. If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy. In order to qualify for this reimbursement, you must send original invoices and receipts to Dorman Products, Inc., 3400 East Walnut Street, Colmar, PA 18915, Attn: Intermediate Steering Shaft Recall. For more information please call our toll free hotline at 1-800-523-2492. Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.
Please reference reimbursement code listed above.
We regret any inconvenience that this action may cause you. However, we are concerned about your safety. If your dealer or independent automotive repair facility is unwilling or is unable to remedy this defect within a reasonable time, you may submit a written complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236; (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov. Nice. You go out of pocket to fix their junk and maybe someday they'll cut you a check.

Re: RECALL NOTICE: Impala, Regal, Grand Prix, Intrigue replacement steering shaft
By the way, I put "Grand Prix" in the title, because as a GM "W" Body, it shares parts with its sibling Impala, Regal, Intrigue and Monte Carlo models. But for some reason, Dorman Products didn't list it in the recall notice....

this recall is only for aftermarket shafts thank God! I've done tons of those over the years but luckily i work at a GM dealer and we use the gm peices. they are kinda a pain to do and I wouldn't want to have to replace them again.
