if your looking for accuracy i would suggest sierra match king you might be able to shoot the 69 grain if not go to the 52 grain. for hunting i would suggest the hornady vmax.

The 60 grain V-MAX flies very nicely for me.
I have 5 AR's, some Mini 14s. Mine does real well with 62 gr. penetrators. Most of the stuff I load is 55 gr though. I use the 55 gr in the Mini's. I have loaded 62 gr. over BLC(2) and Varget and got very good results out of 1:7 and 1:9 rifles.

I have a number of barrels with .224 bore and 1in9 twist rate. I suspect all of the barrels are Wilson or E. R. Shaw. I can stabilize 75 gr. Hornady HPBT and A-Max in all barrels. In a .223 I use 24-24.3 gr. of WC844 or 4855, Rem 7 ½’s producing 2630 FPS. In a .223 using 80 gr, Sierra’s, 24.5 gr. of WC844, CCI Mag. primers at 2760 FPS, I get very good groups at 600 yards. This from either a 20 or 24 inch barrel. BUT, I cannot stabilize the 80’s in 22-250 while the 75’s do very well. I know the velocity is higher in the 22-250 but can’t find the 22-250 record book. All .223 cases were LC all bullets were MolyCoated. .223’s were shot 100 to 1000 yards .223 were shot 600 and 1000 yards. Velocity’s were obtained in my backyard 75 yard range.

My 1:9 savage bolt action prefers the 69 gr sierra or noslers. You really are going to have to experiment. I would start out with the 53-55 grain bullets first though.

I have a Remington 700, that's 1:12, that will stabilize 50 gr. and below. 55 gr. is all over the paper. .5 MOA with 50gr. V-Max though.

That is in a Remington PSS 1 in 9 topped with a Springfield Armory 223 R/F scope. It will cut holes at 100 and drop a crow at 375 yds.

Not an AR barrel, but it is a 1:9 Savage barrel. I fired this group last week while trying to find a good 55gr load for my Savage 12FV .223 rifle.

I'm still working on the 55gr load, but I had loaded up some 45gr SMP bullets to see how they would do. There are five shots in this group. Four right at the 2" high mark and I pulled one low at about the 1 1/2" high mark. The load was fired at 100yds from a rest.

I won't be using the 45's in my Bushmaster......but I might have found a nice varmit round for my 1:9 Savage!!

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd revive it since I know how much people hate multiple threads on the same issue. Hoping someone with exp (lycan) can weigh in on this?

I'm using a 16.125" 1:9 twist barrel. I've been using 55 grains store bought ammo on a bench rest (don't have the space for reloading til I move out of my current location). Best group I've been able to shoot is 0.9" at 100 yards, with the average being between 1.25"-1.5". Not sure how much better I can expect using a slightly higher grain perhaps? I don't have the sturdiest bench rest but I've made it work.

I'm totally happy with those groups, knowing most of the variance in user related... just wondering if I can tighten them up with a heavier grain... I just don't want to spend money on 7 different grain weights. Are there 1 or 2 others I should try?

Who made the barrel, and what is it made out of? If it's a standard chrome lined "mil-spec" type barrel you likely won't do any better. If it's a stainless match barrel, maybe you can improve the groups.
