At an unsupervised range it is usually an unwritten rule to announce that the range is hot, and to ask people nearby if they are ready or not. To simply start firing will usually win you a few choice words thrown your way. Especially if your bench neighbor hasn't put on his muffs yet, etc.

It takes but a second to yell, are we ready?, or range is hot!, or something similar.....

Just the same, its a good idea to yell "can we get a clear?" when you want to go downrange to check targets. Just don't expect to yell those words and have everyone stop what they are doing. It will take a minute or so sometimes, as in when near deer season and there are alot of people using the range. Be courteous, be patient, and you will get along fine with people.

It is a good practice for ALL shooters to also act as Range Officers, calling attention to unsafe weapon handling, etc.

I would agree to this only if the person is not some self appointed authoritarian ego head, who thinks he'll walk around in a Napoleonlike state, barking orders at each and every shooter. Those guys get the deaf ear from me....

We don't need the R.Lee Ermey drill seargent types, they're detrimental to a safe environment IMO because people wind up tuning them out and flipping them off.
