So on the risk of bringing this thread back to its original intention.... discussing the actual range this incident occurred at.... I will post a quick comment.

I've been an RAF member for several years now and can agree with the previous comments about the weekend crowd. It's crowded on weekends and there will undoubtedly be some noobs and even some knuckleheads. The staff has always been attentive to range safety every time I've been there. There have been occasions at RAF there were noobs and the RO placed them on the far lane near the wall and kept several open lanes between them and anyone else, for safety and better supervision. Even informed me they were noobs and to keep an eye out, as would he. Couple other times, the RO came out from behind the glass and gave some on-the-spot corrections to safety violations as well as the usual marksmanship instruction.

The only single time someone swept me with a muzzle at RAF was a guy "teaching" his son how to shoot pistols and rifles. He backed up from the line to put away a pistol in his bag... magazine inserted, slide closed, pointed straight at me for about 2 seconds, while I was walking behind the line to exit the range. I stopped dead in my tracks and took a calculated step backward away from his aim. I think the look alone that I gave him made him realize he was a knucklehead, as he presented the "tail-tucked-between-his-legs-look" and quickly put away the pistol.

So, if it hasn't already been made clear, I would not categorize RAF as an unsafe range. My experiences there have been very good, as compared to the other hundred-some-odd ranges I have been to...

I think that were I to find that many people at the range I attend I would leave, that is the type of situation that breeds accidents. Additionally, whenever on the range it is important to communicate any actions to maintain safety, safety is everyones responsibility. And were there individuals who would not listen to common sense safety I would move to have them banned.
