Default Restocking / building a "custom" rifle

I have a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 that was built to be a practical rifle before I purchased it. The barrel was cut down to 20 inches but the stock doesn't fit as well as it could. It's been suggested that it is the perfect candidate to build a custom rifle.

But, I'm not really sure where to start. Could you recommend a local stockmaker or source to procure a new stock for it please? I'd prefer wood if at all possible.

    Thanks

    -Chris

If you got the $$ and dont mind a little wait, mcmillan stocks are some really good ones, but i would also check out bruce baer, the world class gunsmith, he also has some really high speed looking wood stocks and not as expensive as mcmillan, and bruce is world class, thats probably who i would go to if i were you, some of his stocks are incredibly made and 'eye catching'

Give Richards Micro fit Gun stocks a try. Plenty of styles and the price isn't too terribly bad either.

    Great website, sharpshooter!!!!!!!
If you can work your own wood, Havoc,IMO this would be a great place to get your wood.
I'm a Walnut or Maple kinda guy myself, and like to work from a 90% inletted piece, and shape to my liking after the inletting is done.
Model 70's are great pieces to work from , especially the pre-64's.
If your gonna build a custom though, make sure you want to stay with the barrel and caliber you have, as now would be the time to re-barrel, before you inlet a barrel, unless you decide to go with a larger contour later and can enlarge the barrel channel to fit.
There are a large number of books out there to help you if you stock your own.
