I used that technique for my first AR build in my 20s and hated it. I have a stag single sided left hand safety in my spare parts bin that I'll give you if you want it. My preference is an ambi selector, switch to fire with my thumb, switch back to safe with trigger finger so I'll never use it. PM me if you want it.

I have three match AR's that are set up with a left handed only safety and left handed mag releases. I stick with righties on my other AR's. I can live with a righty set up on those. To tell the truth, I rarely use the safety. Typically there is no time that I have the gun loaded and need to make it safe. If I have to make it safe, it gets unloaded, mag out, and bolt locked back.
