    You said it would be used as a trainer? I would stick with something that had same controls as an ar15 if so.

    As Xringshooter said the s&w 15-22 is a very good choice. Reliable and not expensive. They used to make a pistol version I believe, but not anymore.

    For the pistol the Tippman looks good.

    If you are willing to build or at least but the upper separate PSA sells 22 uppers and Right to Bear sales a good selection of their house brand and cmmg 22 ar parts

    I put this together for my sons 7th birthday.

    It’s a 22lr complete upper from PSA on an Anderson lower I assembled with the SBA3 brace. Keep us well lubed and it runs well on bulk ammo.

    It runs off standard Black Dog 22lr mags which are reliable and affordable.
