In Altoona , you would think of them as boundaries for who is 1st , 2nd , and so on due to respond.
Made up example but close to real …. station 310 has 2 boxes ….. 310-1 and 310-2
310 goes to everything in that area but if a MVA with entrapment ….. which requires 2 engines......station 320 is 2nd due to respond if in box 310-1
If MVA with entrapment is in 310-2 ….. station 340 is the 2nd station to respond to the call.

Let's say station 310 is out of service for a dog and pony show.
    During that time.....
Station 320 will cover the area of 310-1
And maybe station 330 covers the area of 310-2
and it goes on and on and on regarding who is up next for what type of call
They do that different here. They call the station and then announce which stations are backing them up. The "box" always comes at the end, after the location is announced.

I will try to record one.

I just recorded a couple on my phone but have no idea how to upload it so I will try to transcribe it. (Changed the address slightly)

BEEEEP 322 cover 322A, a medical alert alarm, 1234 Shannon Dr, off of Shannon Blvd, Box Sixty-six Fourteen Lower Providence
322 is Medic 322, Lower Providence Community Ambulance, the main station. 322A is a substation at the other end of the township.
Shannon is an enormous retirement community in Lower Providence.

    Another:
BEEEP, TONE 355 Respiratory emergency, XYZ Nursing Home, 1234 Hunting Pike, between Elm rd and Horse rd, Box Five Two, Lower Moreland
355 is the Medic unit of the Bryn Athyn Fire Co.

Seems pretty standard to me. Our county transmits the tones, identifies the stations and units on the call, describes the box, the type of call, the address, the township, repeats all of this again and ends with the time.

To your point, they are pretty busy today.
Mostly fire dispatches for downed wires.

Hearing the box on dispatch is getting pretty uncommon. It just isn’t needed anymore, and although what is due is set up in boxes, it changes so often due to apparatus being out of service it is of little help.

And no one at all is supposed to be using 10 codes. Plan speech is the standard.

    Thanks for the thread.

As a result I punched in a frequency for a random police channel in the area and I am listening to it.

There is a call about a suspicious vehicle....due to how it is parked. Someone is going to CHECK IT OUT!!!

8 or 9 teens beating up an older white woman near Giant Eagle.

Now, how is it they have a racial description of the woman but not ONE of the "juveniles" ?
