A federal judge has blocked contact between Biden administration officials and social media companies, ruling that the two were working together to censor speech.
The judge, Trump appointee Terry A. Doughty, made the preliminary injunction in response to a lawsuit from Republican attorneys general in Missouri and Louisiana that alleged government officials and social media companies collaborated to suppress speech based on content.
"The Court has granted our motion to BLOCK top officials in the federal government from violating the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans," Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey tweeted. "What a way to celebrate Independence Day."
The suit stems largely from efforts made during the pandemic to address social media posts related to COVID-19 policy. The attorneys general accused the Biden administration of creating a sprawling federal "Censorship Enterprise," the Washington Post reported, encouraging Big Tech companies to remove disfavored speech.
The pair called it "the most egregious violations of the First Amendment in the history of the United States of America."
While the judge hasn't made a final ruling, he said the plaintiffs had produced evidence of a "massive effort" from the White House and federal agencies to "suppress speech based on its content." Doughty allowed for exceptions to the communication block, including national security threats and criminal activity.
Collaboration between the government and Big Tech during the pandemic has been controversial for years now.
In one famous exchange, then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in July 2021 the administration was "flagging problematic posts for Facebook," leading a reporter to ask how long the administration had been spying on people's profiles.
In subsequent Twitter posts, Bailey said the injunction prohibits nearly all of the federal government, including the Department of Justice, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Homeland Security, from colluding with social media companies and prevents key officials from participating.
DHS briefly introduced a disinformation governance board last year, which was shut down after fierce criticism.
"The federal government cannot be trusted to protect Americans' rights, which is precisely why our Founders enshrined the First Amendment into the Constitution," Bailey tweeted.
A White House official said the Justice Department is reviewing the decision.
"DOJ is reviewing the court's injunction and will evaluate its options in this case," the official said. "This administration has promoted responsible actions to protect public health, safety, and security when confronted by challenges like a deadly pandemic and foreign attacks on our elections. Our consistent view remains that social media platforms have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects their platforms are having on the American people, but make independent choices about the information they present."
The entrenched, unelected, bureaucracy (colluding with the Liberal Leftist Elected Administration and the Liberal Leftist 4th Estate) has an agenda of subverting the Rights of THE PEOPLE. The Coronavirus Panic is only ONE venue where their Marxist commitments are on display.

That's a cavernous exception right there, especially since our communist Democrats seem to see no difference between national security and their security...
I wonder if the criminal activity exception would apply to them?

I see this argument/perspective expressed all the time... (so this is not a personal confrontation)
But the counter to that is the Declaration regarding 'Self-Evidence':
The Principles of the Declaration of Independence and national Constitution are not limited to the government. That Rights are endowed by our Creator makes them universal, beyond society and beyond government. When they are not respected as universally valid, no free society can exist or endure.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...
The entire society of the Founders was intended to (and should be) guided by the same principles that limit what government can do to us >>> That, is the Self-Evidence Of Unalienable Rights. FREEDOM DEMANDS IT! Violations of those rights, by government, by societal mob action or individual coercive actions, do violent harm to our Rights. That, too, should be Sefl-Evident. It should be avoided not only for the damage done to the targeted individuals, but because it damages a Free Society, and will, eventually, damage those who take such actions. So, whether avoiding violation of the Independence and Constitutional Principles is done out of conscience toward others, out of patriotism for the Founding principles or even out of selfish personal (future) protection, living out the Founding Principles, everywhere, ought to be the Sefl-Evident Necessity for a Free Society.
We have a national Constitution to remind the government of it's limitations (for the good of everyone) and there should be within us a personal Constitution that implements those same limitations for the good of all. Speaking as though certain when you lack information, Punishing others because they disagree with you, Imposing lockdowns by arbitrary choice of industry, Mandating vaccinations that lack proper testing, are all direct violations of those Principles.
I hate the present myopic focus on any issue where the overriding principles of FREE existence are sacrificed for the temporary concern of making decisions that are sefl-serving and self-satisfying.

Mask Mandates Return Amid COVID-19 Spike

The recent increase in COVID-19 cases in some parts of the U.S. prompted some organizations to reinstate mask mandates.
Healthcare giant Kaiser Permanente began requiring staff, patients, and visitors wear masks this week at its facility in Santa Rosa, California, according to The Hill. In New York, Upstate Medical University announced last week that it's making a similar mandate at two of its hospitals.
Rutgers University in New Jersey and Morris Brown College in Georgia are mandating masks for their campuses, the latter doing so as a two-week precautionary measure.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., railed against the news from the Atlanta-based school, writing on X: "Americans have had enough COVID hysteria. WE WILL NOT COMPLY!"
Hollywood movie studio Lionsgate this week asked its employees in Santa Monica, California, to wear masks on certain office floors in response to a few staff members who tested positive for the coronavirus.
While hospitalizations from COVID-19 have been rising nationally in recent weeks, data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that hospital admission rates are still low in 97% of the U.S.
Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), told The Hill that publicly available data, as well as personal responsibility, should inform decisions about masking.
"I think the new approach is we want to make that information available to the public and give people some warning that there may be some increases in disease activity," Plescia said. "And then people decide for themselves sort of how they want to react and what kind of precautions they want to take."
Masks became controversial during the pandemic, with opinions largely divided along partisan lines about whether the government, businesses, or schools had the authority to force people to wear them.
Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration did not have the authority to mandate that companies with 100 or more employees ensure their workers get vaccinated for COVID-19 or wear masks. Individual businesses can enforce their own policies, however.
Doctors and public health experts say that wearing properly-fitting N95 masks can help slow the viral spread through communities.
Whether through prior infection or vaccination, the majority of people possess some level of COVID-19 antibodies. Pending approval by federal regulators, the updated COVID-19 vaccines are expected to become available in September.
