Thanks for all the recommendations and help.
I literally just finished my Technician exam minutes ago, aced it!
I will surely be back with many more questions as I go further.

Any experience with the Nagoya 771? I'm between that and the ABBREE 18".
I just recently purchased the ABBREE 18" one. The base of the antenna is pretty big and on the heavier side and makes the radio pretty top heavy. There is marked improvement over the rubber duck. I haven't done any scientific bench testing, but I can hit repeaters much further vs the rubber duck. While the thing does look cool and I like the idea of having the ability to fold it out of the way and reply it when I need to, I feel like I would be afraid to break the base of the antenna where it attaches to the radio if it were to encounter any hard use. But I guess thats the great thing about a Baofeng, is that if I destroy the radio and the antenna im only out $35.

I have multiple lengths on the Abbree, the smallest/ shortest is used every day, the 38" is for when on SAR tasks. for me, it's choosing the right tool for the job.

Congratulations. You'll find radios are like rabbits, they multiply quickly and you'll be darned if you know where they all come from. To be sure you will branch into a mobile, either for use as a base station or in your vehicle (or both), and you may start experimenting with various Digital modes (DMR, WIRES, Fusion, etc) which some classify as internet radio use, what ever your course, get "Radio Active" and welcome to the club, lots out there to learn and experiment with.

Congrats! Where did you test?
I also passed my Technician exam with CUARC this evening. Printed my CSCE and put it on display it on the refrigerator.

Congrats. I did it remotely through Anchorage Amateur Radio Club. Was a very seamless process.

It was almost comical, moving the camera around to prove that I didnt have cheat sheet hidden under my chair.
Now its just a waiting game to see when our call signs appear in the FCC Database.
