Senator Regan responds to Governor Wolf’s “Shut-Down Thursday”

Yesterday, tired and sleepless after trying to navigate the last few days of government orders, business owners turned their lights off and locked their doors to head home for the evening. To their surprise, they then discovered a new recorded message from Governor Wolf who officially ordered all "non-life-sustaining businesses" in Pennsylvania to close their physical locations, effective 8:00 PM that same night, March 19, 2020, to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

While the severity of COVID-19 is not to be taken lightly, Governor Wolf chose to deliver this taped order from the comfort of his home and not behind a podium. He chose to avoid the tough questions and media cameras. This is not the leadership that the hardworking, taxpaying residents of Pennsylvania deserve.

With little notice of the Governor’s order, I started fielding many calls – from the one-man shop to small and large businesses alike. They are all fearful that the Governor's recent order may cause them to never unlock their doors again.

It has been an extremely difficult few days and weeks for these men and women as we have seen Wall Street plunge and fear set in with flashbacks of the economic hardships of 2001 and 2008. On average, the small business owner has one month’s worth of operating capital on hand to run their business; for the neighborhood restauranteur or hardware store, even less. Running a business and making payroll is tough, and what makes it tougher is knee-jerk decision making and poor direction from the Wolf Administration.

In response to the Governor’s most recent order, I fought alongside Senate leadership in asking the Governor to re-examine the businesses and industries that he has placed on the "non-life-sustaining business" list. He has agreed that businesses can appeal and seek a waiver to be considered life-sustaining businesses. To me and my colleagues, every business in this Commonwealth is life-sustaining to someone.
Over the course of the last 18 hours, I have had conversations with many business owners in the 31st District, and one sector in particular that is considered to be "non-life-sustaining" is payroll services. I spoke with an owner of such a company that has 40 employees and is responsible for the payroll of over 100 businesses.

One of their customers is a medical supplier. Can you imagine being among those individuals working diligently to furnish face masks, gloves, and supplies to our medical teams on the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis and not receiving a paycheck? I can't.

Another customer of the payroll service is one of our local municipal police departments. Imagine being that patrol officer who deters criminal behavior every day and puts their life on the line for our safety, yet doesn’t receive a pay check. Under Governor Wolf’s order that would be the case – on top of being expected to assist in enforcement of his newest order.

Payroll services are life-sustaining, as are coal mines, hotels, and manufacturing plants that the Governor has tried to board up. They send checks to hardworking people so they can keep a roof over their heads and put meals on the table.

Rather than identifying “life-sustaining” businesses, the Governor has effectively chosen winners and losers. If this proceeds business owners will be faced with layoffs and complete closures with many filing for bankruptcy and forcing thousands more onto the unemployment rolls, which is unsustainable. This just may have a generational impact on our business community and every day working people in Pennsylvania.

I recognize that a balance must be struck between protecting the health of Commonwealth residents while maintaining life-sustaining jobs. I promise to do everything I can to protect your jobs, families, and future.

These steps taken by the leftist governors weren't to protect the people, far from it. It is the intention of these governors to destroy the economies of these states so that working class people will now become the poor and dependent. This has been the dream of the left with people like Wolf, Murphy, Cuomo and the other leftists hellbent on changing the things they couldn't get changed with legislation and voters. You can say what you want about the CNN/China virus but it's all bullshit and now you'll see the socialists/communists come out the woodwork and work to finish the republic off to turn the country into something they normally couldn't have done. This is why the democrats in Washington aren't serious about a stimulus package nor do they care about middle class working people. It's clearly evident when the four martinti for lunch speaker adds 300 million dollars in subsidies in a joke package for refugees in other countries that have nothing to do with the USA.

So what’s with this new stay at home “order” from dear leader Wolfe that goes in effect at 8pm tonight for residents of certain counties Allegheny being one (my county)? My job is on the Life sustaining list, so I take it, outside of going to and from work or to store for food we are supposed to now stay in our homes? And what’s the enforcement look like? Do the police plan on pulling over every vehicle and checking “papers”? I’m a homebody for the most part, so I usually don’t go out that much To begin with but I can assure you I will not be abiding by comrade wolfs decree. If I wanna go for a ride or walk my dog etc I’m damn well going to do so. I will stay away from crowds and such but I will not be ordered into my house!

I just found out Erie County now has a stay home order also. 5 cases confirmed, 4 related. What is the penalty if I am found going to my indoor range. Can that be considered life sustaining, practicing in case SHTF?

I still can't believe he added Erie County, while there are other counties with 5 to 6 times the number of cases confirmed, like Lehigh and Luzerne.

You have to wonder if this is some kind of political bullshit. You could draw two lines, one just north of Allegheny County going east to the border, and another, north to south, from the western border of Lehigh County, and that would probably contain 95% of all cases in the state.
