The fake stats are deceptively worded, they usually compare (a) your gun being used to kill a family member or someone you know, compared to (b) being used to kill an attacker.

The first stat is bogus because most attackers are "someone you know". The guy who delivered your dishwasher and saw that you had guns to steal, and came back later, is "someone you know". That terrible employee who you finally fired and he's drunk and wants to kill you, is "someone you know". The abusive ex-boyfriend who wants you to die together if he can't have you, also "someone you know". Killing someone you know before they kill you is a GOOD thing.

The second stat is also bogus, because it assumes that the only utility of a gun is to kill a bad guy. The 5 million saves per year in this country argue otherwise; that's a median estimate of how often good people use guns to save themselves, usually with a defensive display that chases the predator away without killing him. Limiting defensive gun uses to fatalities is a lie, there's no other way to characterize it.
