    Default stock finish removal

How does one remove the hard glossy stock finish on Remington (and similar) rifles? Is there a solvent? Technique?

    Paint Stripper is the easiest.

I've also sanded down to the wood before, but that takes a lot of course sandpaper and can remove more wood than you might want if you sand to deep.

I've used paint striping gel and a plastic scraper dozens of times. It might take several applications but it will get the job done.

I put my wife's Mossberg stock and forend in my blasting cabinet and stripped it with fine play sand. It turned out great. As long as you don't use blasting media that's too aggressive, it will turn out fine. It has a very slight texture to it now which is better in my opinion than the smooth finish of the wood previously. It basically feels like a heavier polymer stock so it's not so slippery.

Those plastic finishes on Remington's and Weatherby's are tough to remove. A chemical stripper will save you a lot of work. The best I have found is sold in automobile paint stores. It is a heavy duty stripper called "Airplane Remover", of all things. You will need to wear heavy rubber gloves, eye protection, and a paint spray mask or go outside. Scuff the finish with course sand paper so the paint remover can get under the finish. Slather it on thick, wrap in plastic wrap so it does not evaporate and stays wet. Let it work. Then use plastic scrapers to remove the majority of the softened finish. Wash the remaining residue off with mineral spirits or hot water and spray cleaner like Simple Green.
