    Default Handmade Grip Panels

I got a hold of some scrap wood at work that happened to be some kind of oak, and I decided to make my own grip panels for my Star BM. A friend's dad "sliced" the 2x4 for me with a table saw, and I used a drill for the screw holes, but everything else was done with basic hand tools and lots of sanding.

    Nice job. They look great!
What did you use to finish them?

Look great. Any idea how many hours you have into the project? Every time I have done something like that I wished it would have timed the effort. Never did though. Always thought of it after the fact.

    Looks like a good fit.

    Good work.

I just made a shelf for the wife out of white oak. Stuff was hard to work with, particularly drilling, screwing and nailing. I probably won't use that wood again. She's getting pine from now on.

Also weighed a ton when finished.

Just sprayed them with krylon "clear glaze" high gloss polyurethane from wal mart.

I didn't time it unfortunately, but I completed them over the course of two weeks, messing with them here and there after work.

I ran into a bit of trouble with the screw holes. Drilled the recessed hole a little too deep and had to fill it in partially with makeshift wood putty(glue and sawdust), and then the other panel, I made them a milimeter or two too close and had to expand them a bit, so they look kinda rough on the right panel.

Next set I do, I wanna do a bullet casing inlay in the center of each grip.

Haha, yeah, but it's worth it. The stuff looks beautiful, and you know it'll last without getting dinged up too easily.

    Hard wood is always better.

Grips look great there Fella. Outstanding job for a first time.

Make some more and start selling them.

Very nice! You can't even tell that they're DIY grips. I used some spray polyurethane on my wife's 500 stock and had to sandblast it off because it smelled awful. Linseed oil smells really good though. Did you have any issues with odd smells with the wood finishing stuff you used?

Pure tung oil smells really good if you aren't going for glossy. Four of five hand rubbed coats will do the trick.

I used to get it from the milk paint guy before he moved out of town to NC.
