I didn't, but I'm not bothered by smells like that either.

I'm definitely gonna make more of these. I wanna try out different kinds of wood, maybe eventually learn to checker them, probably start with stipling, since that looks a lot easier.

I'm glad you guys like them. Free scrap wood beats the hell outta paying at least $30, all the way up to $100, for a set.

They look good against the dark background. Get a cheap set of checkering tools from Brownell's. It is not as hard as you think to do straight lints. It does take patience. I don't know how old you are, but my hands are starting to go now and it is hard for me.

I'm 34, and I can draw. I did all of the shaping of these grips by hand, so I definitely have patience, I'm just not too sure on how steady my hands are. I can't erase cuts in wood like I can with a pencil eraser on paper, but I do wanna try it eventually. I also saw where someone used a grinding wheel to do it. It looks a lot faster, but it also looks a lot easier to screw up.

Biggest mistakes are: It is a file, not a knife. Don't force the tool and take light cuts to lay out the pattern. You can always clean up the pattern, but are in trouble if you initially go too deep.
