Default LEO Firearms Mental Health Institutions

    Group,

I've got a strange question that was posed to me. I work in a drug and alcohol / mental health facility in PA. State policy / DDAP states very clearly that employees may not carry firearms on the premise, period dot dot dot. However a question was posed to me can LEO carry firearms onto a mental health facility or should they be secured? A patient recently witnessed a plain duty police officer carrying a firearm and it has been upsetting to them. I was wondering if there was a state law that addressed this. Kind of a strange and off the wall question but is there places where a PA LEO cannot carry his / her weapon? Thanks for the input!

Don’t know if it’s law, or policy, but every psych ward I ever entered to retrieve a military member detained within, I had to secure my sidearm. The states I had duty in were Texas, California, Nevada, and Arizona.

That really is a question for your legal department. However, when I worked for DOC policy was/is no firearms inside the secure area. LEOs making a visit secured their weapons prior to coming in the compound. I don't know the particulars of your work setting, but its a question that deserves being bumped up the food chain.

When I was in the PD, we used to have to provide officers to the in-patient ward (county hospital) when there was no guards available.
    always had to secure.

In all of the Psych Hospitals that I had to transport 302’s into in Philadelphia, we always had to secure our firearms in lock boxes. No firearms inside the ward.

They're more of an outpatient 302 situation.
