Default captive recoil spring rod stuck

So I bought a recoil spring for the Star BM, and I can't get the rod apart to swap the springs. I can't find much info on this particular thing, but the few sources I did find say that the D or U shaped end is a nut that unscrews from the rest of the rod, but I can't get the thing to budge. At first I had rubber between the pliers and the rod, but it seemed like I just wasn't getting a good grip. Then I tried without the rubber, and I'm just chewing up the rod. It's currently soaking in WD-40.

Does anybody have any suggestions other than buying another rod?

Email back from jack first just says to put the D-end in a vice, contract the spring, and unscrew the rod...

I did also find someone saying they put loctite on those threads.

Just a guess....if the spring is snug on the rod, it will allow rotation in one direction, and tighten and stop rotation in the opposite rotation. That would be the reason for instruction to retract the spring first. Failing that, put some heat on the threaded area. Not enough to make the metal change color, just make it increase in size on the molecular level. Heat, ice cube, heat, ice cube....work it until it yields. And don't be afraid to tighten it more (slightly) as well as loosen.

I did try heat several times, and still no success, although I didn't use any ice. And I don't have an actual vice, just vice grip pliers. If you're saying not enough heat to change the metal color, too late, I already did that. I think I'm about to go see the gunsmith this weekend before I completely screw it up.

I did try turning both ways just in case it's reverse threaded, but I just can't get it to move at all.

Thanks for all the advice. After soaking for at least 24 hours in WD-40, I just said to hell with it and took it to a local gunsmith before chewing up the rod any further. Then I felt like a child asking daddy to fix his broken toy truck as it took him all of 20 seconds to put it in a vice and unscrew the nut with a wrench, then repeat the process in reverse after sliding on the new spring.

I REALLY need to invest in a proper work space and tools... At least a bench-mounted vice with some brass plates.

You loosened it for him. Congrats!
