Default Virginia Democrats say they have reached a deal on 'red flag' gun law

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/virginia-...d-flag-gun-law

Virginia Democratic lawmakers said Friday they had reached a deal on a controversial “red flag” bill that would allow authorities to temporarily take away firearms from people deemed a threat to themselves or others, a measure that has been strongly opposed by gun rights advocates.

The bill, which has been heavily debated in both the state Senate and House of Delegates, is part of Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s gun control package.

Democratic Sen. George Baker of Fairfax County said at a House Public Safety Committee meeting Friday that he and his House counterpart, Del. Rip Sullivan, have come to an agreement on their respective bills, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

If the measures pass, a person would not need to be charged with a crime or even accused of one for their gun to be taken away. They would then be granted a hearing within 14 days of having their firearm seized to determine whether they will get it back or lose it for a longer period of time.

Republicans opposed the bill, voicing concerns about people not being able to protect themselves or their homes during the 14-day period while they are waiting for their hearing.

Other bills that passed out of committee Friday include one that would expand background checks and one that would allow Virginians to voluntarily put themselves on a list that would prohibit them from purchasing firearms.

Why would anyone put themselves on a list to prohibit themselves from purchasing a firearm? For what reason? The rest of that is ridiculous as well. It’s still a red flag law that’s unconstitutional. It just shows that even after voicing yourself they’ll just do what Bloomberg paid them to do. You know he wanted to pass a law that you couldn’t buy more than a 16 ounce soft drink? Something goofy like that, but he wants to control your life down to what you eat and drink That shows how much of a tyrant he is. He knows better than we do. Seems like all of these politicians think they know better than us and that we can’t be trusted with guns or even soft drinks... even though we are their supervisors and we pay them.

Are they being voted in right down the party lines in Virginia? Like all the dems vote for and republicans vote against? People are being fed false information about all of this. The numbers are inflated or just made up. I heard Biden said there were like 150 million gun deaths a year or something ridiculous like that... the media is also on their side. People hear that and just repeat it like a mocking bird with no proof. I still believe they want war. You can’t tell me all of these politicians can’t see that none of these laws actually prevent crime. They just prey on the uninformed people.

Newly Empowered Virginia Democrats Pass Progressive Agenda
Legislature wraps up session after passing gun limits, abortion-rights and anti-discrimination measures

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/virgini...le_email_share

    Excerpt from the article.

Gun control was the marquee issue of the session, as it was in last year’s election campaign. The issue gained urgency last May after a mass shooting in Virginia Beach.
Several gun-related bills were weakened, as they worked their way through the legislative process, said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group. “Virtually all of them started out much worse than they are,” he said.

Mr. Van Cleave said he thought lawmakers took into account a mass demonstration against gun-control measures that drew an estimated 22,000 protesters outside the state Capitol in January. Many Virginia communities declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries, meaning they wouldn’t follow new gun restrictions they say violate the state or federal constitutions.

A February poll released by Christopher Newport University found broad support among Virginians for some gun-control bills, with 86% in favor of universal background checks and 73% backing a red-flag law. The survey found 54% of voters favored banning assault-style weapons.
