Default Just bought my first AR15.... clueless on optics

So I just bought my first AR15... its a LWRC IC-A5 with a 16 inch barrel:
    LWRC-IC-A5-5-56mm_101310486_597_5DF9432B68513723.JPG

I was going to put an Eotech EXPS3 red dot on it and be done.... seems like a waste to go red dot on something on a carbine with a 16' inch barrel or maybe I am stupid and don't know what I'm talking about... cause I don't lol

I'm not trying for ultra accuracy here.... and max range is about 550 feet with match ammo? but what's a good mid to max range optic I can stick on this thing for $500-$1000

I am pretty sure that the max range is going to be more than 183 yards. Primary arms has quite a few choices for optics for a rifle like yours

Nice rifle, fortunately everything else is wrong.

Red dots were made for carbines which have a max range of 500-600 yards in the hands of someone who knows how to use one. Realistically the average person can get pretty easy hits on man sized targets between 200 and 300 yards with some practice. There are many different choices for optics you just need to decide what the rifle is actually for and what type of sighting picture you prefer.

Your optics budget leaves the door opened to many higher end brands and options like Eotech and Aimpoint which are combat proven. You can also choose to save a few bucks and go with something just as reliable like Trijicon MRO, or even same more and try a few different cheaper options from Holosun or Sig see what you actually like then upgrade in the future once you get some experience. Want some magnification then add a 3-5x's flip up magnifier behind your dot of choice and it's right there.

Iron sights are great everyone should learn how to use them and maybe even have a back up set of flip ups on their rifle but red dot optics are faster, more versatile, and way more fun.

Congratulations on your purchase - it's a beaut! Breaking it in will take a little time, but enjoy the process. Your 1x7 twist barrel will handle just about anything you put in it, but will really shine at distance with 77 gr. pills.

See post #1373 (mostly LWRC stuff) on the "Did you go shooting today?" forum here: http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.php?t=161683&page=138

You can dress this up for around $500-600 at prices way below "suggested" retail. You'll find most of this on Amazon:

Consider a Vortex 1x8x24mm Strike Eagle scope: https://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Optics...s%2C157&sr=8-5

    A cantilever mount: https://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Optics...s%2C384&sr=8-8

    A throw ring: https://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Optics...%2C384&sr=8-24

And also a sling of your preference.

I've found LWRC's to be solid platforms - and candidates for the "Buy once, cry once" membership. Way to go...

I agree with this dude. At this point in the experience curve, pick up a good pair of irons. Then later on pick up a red dot.

    Why?

With the lack of experience the red dot would aid the shooter more.

For what its worth, there's a post in the General folder deals thread about select Bushnell products being on a mail in 29% rebate (for leap year). With rebate and other sales, some might fit the bill here. 223 AR scopes were fairly cheap and at least one better model marked down from like $750 to $350 (plus the rebate)
