I don't feel under or over gunned although I am thinking about selling the RRA (just thinking right now)
    You can be over gunned?

Currently unattached, and my 29yo son lives with his mother 15-20 minutes away.

Being able to outfit a guest (or 2) is not a terrible idea

What job(s) would the AR-10 serve that the others could not?

Horsepower at longer ranges and most importantly, cool factor. :-)

Than why not choose 6.5mm instead? It out ranges 308 by a long haul! Or wait, forget those, go with the long action version & run a 300Win Mag!

Can always go with “MORE”..., but honestly, I believe the AR15 in 5.56 IS the best “one trick pony”. After all, it HAS been kicking ass & taking names as the longest service run battle rifle in history, running 57 years & counting!

6.5 loses to .308/7.62 in the ammo availability and cost category though. Agreed with the AR15 being the best 'one trick pony' especially with economics and interchangeability in mind, but a .308 is still fun and good to have .

Well, I reload 6.5-08 so “availability” doesn’t apply to those like me. (Which should be EVERY shooter....because if you don’t know how to reload, you don’t know all that much!)

Also, even in the case of factory ammo, I’m not so sure it’s true with 308 anymore, when considering 6.5 Creedmoor! I’ve been in stores where 6.5CM outnumbered 308 by no small margin!

I get what you’re saying. Just playing “devils advocate”. I do agree, it is fun, and no reason NOT to. I’m coming from a point of if you need to choose “one”. Of all the calibers that have come come along, and continue to....., I always come back to the 5.56/223 in the AR. It’s what the AR was designed for(AR15, as the AR10 was invented first). As a whole, the AR15 is cheaper, holds more rounds & is a more sound platform than the 10.

I have quite a few ARs, but I only really only shoot two. So for my uses, I only NEED two ARs. Having an identical back up for each would be a nice luxury.

I have my primary 11.5” suppressed AR15 SBR that is set up for day and night time shenanigans. It is my fighting rifle if needed and could also be used for multigun matches. I don’t make it to many AR15 matches any more which is why I don’t have an AR15 in 5.56 set up just for competition. It is an all around gun and can do just about anything. A lightweight night vision compatible red dot, a white/IR light, an IR laser, back up sights, and a sling is what it has. If i had the need to shoot at further distances it would have a 1-6x LPVO.

I shoot my 9mm AR SBR for USPSA pistol caliber carbine division, which is usually once a month. It is pretty bare bones and light weight for competition.

Anything else hangs around and doesn’t see much use.

At this point in my life I feel there is more value in having a few guns that do their job well rather than building more rifles. I also value having things like night vision and attending classes and competitions to build skills or maintain them.

OP asked what AR configuaration to get and yep, I still suggest an AR 10.
